 2023 Preview 


       Gordo completed the 2022 season with a 11-2 record. Last year Gordo captured the region five title and a number one seed in the Class 3A playoffs. They finished region play with a 6-0 record. Gordo lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good Piedmont team by a score of 27-14.

       The high-scoring Gordo offense ranked 10th in the AHSAA. They averaged 43.6 points a game.

       As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Gordo has gone a combined 138-29. Their 82.6% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Gordo has finished a combined 238-74. Their 76.0% winning percentage ranks 1st in Class 3A and 11th in the AHSAA. The Green Wave have been successful on the football field with twenty-five winning seasons during this time. Their last losing season was 1992.




       The Green Wave are led by head coach Gus Smith who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 11-2 record in his first season at Gordo. The Green Wave saw improvement from a 9-3 record the season before coach Smith arrived. Under his direction the Green Wave have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Smith.

       The Green Wave lost their quarterback to graduation but return a starter at RB and WR in 2023.

       The Green Wave enter the 2023 season riding a 8 game regular season winning streak. Gordo has won 10 consecutive region games.

       The Green Wave are considered one of the favorites for the region five championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs. The Green Wave have successfully qualified for the playoffs every year since 2000 and expect to be included again when November rolls around.

       The Green Wave open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Sipsey Valley on Friday, August 25. Last year the Sipsey Valley Bears finished with an overall record of 4-7 and in fourth place in Class 4A region three. The Bears lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Anniston by a score of 52-0.

       Gordo and Sipsey Valley have met a total of 10 times on the football field. The Green Wave have a 10-0-0 record against the Bears. They last met in 2022 with Gordo winning by a score of 50-7.

       Gordo lost 3A All-State  linebacker Max Stephenson to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating were teammates defensive back Kohl Summerville and quarterback Brax Garrison.

       The Green Wave return 3A All-State Junior running back Chrisjavion Lark. He was named to the second team last season. The Green Wave also return Senior receiver Ethan Wilder. He was named to the honorable mention team.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Parrish scored a record 77 points in a playoff game against Cedar Bluff in 2001. The Tornados were shutout the following week 19-0 by Courtland.
