 2023 Preview 


       Haleyville completed the 2022 season with a 6-5 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 4A region five, the Lions earned a spot in the playoffs in 2022. Haleyville's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Oneonta by a score of 56-14.

       Since 2010, Haleyville has gone a combined 78-64. Their 54.9% winning percentage ranks 27th in Class 4A over the past thirteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Haleyville has managed to compile a record of 139-129. Their 52.0% winning percentage ranks 24th in Class 4A and 173rd in the AHSAA.




       The Lions are led by head coach Bo Culver who is entering his fifth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 31-15 over the past four seasons at Haleyville. Under his direction the Lions have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Culver. Over the course of his career, Coach Culver's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eight times and won two region championships.

       The Lions have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region five this season.

       The Lions open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Rogers on Friday, August 25 at Pirate Field. Last year the Rogers Pirates finished with an overall record of 7-4 and in third place in Class 4A region seven. The Pirates lost in the first round of the Class 4A playoffs to Randolph by a score of 54-15.

       Haleyville and Rogers have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Lions have a 4-3-0 record against the Pirates. They last met in 2022 with Rogers winning by a score of 16-10.

      

       The Lions return 4A All-State Senior receiver Brett Coleman. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

  


Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
