 2023 Preview

Sylacauga finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 0-10 record. Last year Sylacauga finished sixth in Class 5A region four with a 0-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Sylacauga took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2007. The Aggies lost as many games as in any season since 1994. The defense allowed a team record 456 points last season. The Aggies hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they did not win a game which followed a 7-4 record in 2021.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Sylacauga averaged scoring just 12.8 points a game. The Aggies also struggled on the defensive side of the football as they found little success in stopping opposing offenses and allowed an average of 45.6 points a game.

Since 2010, Sylacauga has gone a combined 88-53. Their 62.4% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 5A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Sylacauga has managed to compile a record of 149-119. Their 56.0% winning percentage ranks 16th in Class 5A and 122nd in the AHSAA.

The Aggies will be under the direction of new head football coach Chris Smelley as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Smelley spent the 2022 season as quarterbacks coach at Hoover. Over the course of his career, Coach Smelley's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of six times and won three region championships.

The Aggies have the toughest schedule in the entire state. Their non-region opponents include Moody, Trinity, Leeds and Piedmont. Those opponents were 42-9 last year. The Aggies have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 5A. Their opponents had a combined record of 82-35 last season. That ranks 1st in Class 5A and 1st in the AHSAA.

The Aggies enter the 2023 season in the middle of a 12 game losing streak. They would like nothing better than to end the string of losses early in the season.

This season, the Aggies will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region four. After not winning a single game last year, the goal at Sylacauga will be to simply win some games.

The Aggies open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Wenonah on Thursday, August 24 at Bell-Culpepper Stadium. Last year the Wenonah Dragons finished with an overall record of 3-6 and in eighth place in Class 5A region five.

This will be the second meeting between Sylacauga and Wenonah on the football field. The Aggies have a 0-1-0 record against the Dragons. They last met in with
