 2023 Preview

Weaver finished the 2022 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Weaver finished seventh in Class 3A region four with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

Weaver was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Bearcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 16.4 points a game.

The Bearcats would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, Weaver has gone a combined 55-85. Their 39.3% winning percentage ranks 43rd in Class 3A over the past thirteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Weaver has managed to compile a record of 112-156. Their 42.0% winning percentage ranks 44th in Class 3A and 265th in the AHSAA.

The Bearcats will be under the direction of new head football coach Ken Cofer as they enter the 2023 season.  Coach Cofer is the former offensive coordinator at Cleburne County. He was a head football coach in Georgia for nine seasons where his team finished a combined 59-43.

Coach Cofer believes in conditioning in the weight room and discipline will be the keys to turning around the football program at Weaver over the next few seasons. Coach Cofer got a late start at Weaver since he was hired after spring practice was completed.

The Bearcats will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region four this season. After just 2 wins last year, Weaver will be hoping to become more competitive in the region.

Kaden Gooden will be the starting quarterback and leading the offense when the season opens this fall.

The Bearcats open the 2023 season on the road against non-region opponent Donoho on Friday, August 25 at Lentz Field. Last year the Donoho Falcons finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in fourth place in Class 1A region six. The Falcons lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Lynn by a score of 42-0.

Weaver and Donoho have met a total of 2 times on the football field. The Bearcats have a 1-1-0 record against the Falcons. They last met in 2022 with Donoho winning by a score of 31-28.
