 2024 Preview

Ashford completed the 2023 season with a 4-6 record. Last year Ashford finished seventh in Class 3A region two with a 2-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Yellow Jackets last playoff victory came during the 2002 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Since 2010, Ashford has gone a combined 53-89. Their 37.3% winning percentage ranks 50th in Class 4A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Ashford has managed to compile a record of 111-146. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 49th in Class 4A and 252nd in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach David Stapleton III who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 4-6 record in his first season at Ashford. The Yellow Jackets saw improvement from a 2-7 record the season before coach Stapleton III arrived. The Yellow Jackets have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Stapleton III.

Season Outlook:

The Ashford Yellow Jackets will play in Class 4A region two during the 2024 season. The Yellow Jackets move up in classification to Class 4A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

The Yellow Jackets have not made the playoffs since 2014 but have a better shot this season with the realignment of region 2. Only two current teams this season qualified for the playoffs in 2023. That alone will give the Jackets a shot. Even with the move up to 4A the Yellow Jackets will be in the running for one of the playoff spots in 2024.

Ashford will return nine starters from last year's squad to the offense so there will be a lot of experience on that side of the football when fall practice opens in August. The defense will also return nine starters.

Coach Stapleton has Ashford on the verge of turning around the football program and getting back to the post season. Their 4-6 record in his first season is promising and we can see if they can build upon that record in 2024. In Region 2 only one team, 3A Straughn, won more games than they lost last season. This will be one wide open region race until November.

The Yellow Jackets could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region two this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. Ashford has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2014 but hope to return to the post season this year.

Players to Watch in 2024:
LB Jay Ragland had 76 tackles on defense and will be back for his junior season.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: AJ Lewis, Braylon Bigham, Tylan Peterman, Coy Paramore, Alex Swain, Zorren Peterson, Fabian Tamez, Wesley McLendon, Eli Hicks
DEFENSE: Eli Hicks, Jay Ragland, Maddox Tillery, Peyton McBride, TJ Morris, Dakari Hymes, Braylon Bigham, Tylan Peterman, Wesley McLendon
NEWCOMERS: Tramonte Brown, Zay Johnson

Season Opener:
The Yellow Jackets open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Rehobeth on Friday, August 23 at W.F. Andrews Field. Last year the Rehobeth Rebels finished with an overall record of 6-4 and in fifth place in Class 5A region two. The Rebels ended last season on a positive note with a win over G.W. Long by a score of 47-3 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Ashford and Rehobeth have met a total of 77 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 43-32-2 record against the Rebels. They last met in 2021 with Rehobeth winning by a score of 16-6.
