 2024 Preview

Blount finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-8 record. Last year Blount finished seventh in Class 6A region one with a 2-6 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Leopards lost as many games as in any season since 2004.

The offense struggled putting points on the score board as Blount averaged scoring just 12.9 points a game.

Since 2010, Blount has gone a combined 92-64. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 19th in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Blount has managed to compile a record of 138-131. Their 51.0% winning percentage ranks 35th in Class 6A and 185th in the AHSAA.

Head Coach:
The Leopards are led by head coach Ramon Nelson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-8 record in his first season at Blount. The Leopards have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Nelson. Over the course of his career, Coach Nelson's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of one time .

Season Outlook:

The Blount Leopards will play in Class 6A region one during the 2024 season.

The Leopards have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 6A. Their opponents had a combined record of 68-36 last season. That ranks 2nd in Class 6A and 11th in the AHSAA.

The Leopards missed the playoffs the past three seasons. The last time that happened was in 1985. With four different coaches the past four seasons maybe they need some stability at the top. Coach Nelson has hopes of rebuilding the once mighty football program starting in 2024.

The offense lost some starters to graduation but the defense will return all but one starter from last season. Look for this Blount team to be much improved over the the last three seasons.

Coach Nelson told AHSFHS.org. ''Leopards look to be lead by an experienced defense and improved offense. Remaining health is a top priority as Blount competes in tough 6A region One.''

This season, the Leopards will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region one.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: OL- Amauri Reed, Sr.; ATH- TJ Miller, Sr.; RB- Todrick Withers, Jr.
DEFENSE: DL- Chase Howard, Sr.; LB- Braxton Thompson, Sr.; DB- LaZeric Johnson, Sr.
NEWCOMERS: QB- Christopher Wiggins, Sr.; DB- Chris Leatherwood, Jr.; DL- Jayden Adams, Sr.; DB- Kam Lang, Jr.

Season Opener:
The Leopards open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Vigor on Friday, August 23 at Harris-Terry Stadium. Last year the Vigor Wolves finished with an overall record of 7-3 and in fifth place in Class 5A region one. The Wolves ended last season on a positive note with a win over Sidney Lanier by a score of 46-8 after failing to gain a playoff spot.

Blount and Vigor have met a total of 53 times on the football field. The Leopards have a 14-39-0 record against the Wolves. They last met in 2023 with Vigor winning by a score of 26-6.
