 2024 Preview 


       Buckhorn completed the 2023 season with a 6-5 record. With their 3-2 region record and a third place finish in Class 6A region eight, the Bucks earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Buckhorn's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Mountain Brook by a score of 35-14.

       The Bucks won as many games as in any season since 2015. The Bucks last playoff victory came during the 2005 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Since 2010, Buckhorn has gone a combined 63-84. Their 42.9% winning percentage ranks 42nd in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Buckhorn has managed to compile a record of 122-145. Their 46.0% winning percentage ranks 37th in Class 6A and 227th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
       Buckhorn lost 6A All-State  offensive lineman Nathan Sayle to graduation. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

Head Coach:
       The Bucks are led by head coach Matt Patterson who is entering his fourth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 14-18 over the past three seasons at Buckhorn. Under his direction the Bucks have qualified for the playoffs a total of two times. They have not won a region crown with Coach Patterson.

Season Outlook:

       The Buckhorn Bucks will play in Class 6A region eight during the 2024 season.

      

       Buckhorn qualified for the playoffs in each of the last two seasons but will be looking to improve on a 6-5 record from last season with a talented group of players returning and a few newcomers that the fans should watching for this year.

       The schedule starts out tough with the first three games against Decatur, Athens and Gadsden City. If the Bucks can win one or two of those games they will a team to watch out for in region 8.

       Coach Patterson is very optimistic about the 2024 Bucks. He told AHSFHS.org ''Lot of experience back on Defense, and at the skill positions offensively. Have 28 Seniors that will lead this team into the fall. The growth of the offense over the summer and the beginning of the season will tell a lot about the season. The team is ready to take the next step towards hosting playoff games and contending for region championship.''

    The Bucks have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region eight this season.

Season Opener:
       The Bucks open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Decatur on Friday, August 23 at Tommy R. Ledbetter Stadium. Last year the Decatur Red Raiders finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in fifth place in Class 6A region seven. The Red Raiders closed out the regular season with a loss to Scottsboro by a score of 35-20.

       Buckhorn and Decatur have met a total of 11 times on the football field. The Bucks have a 4-7-0 record against the Red Raiders. They last met in 2023 with Buckhorn winning by a score of 26-21.

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
