 2024 Preview 


       Citronelle completed the 2023 season with a 6-4 record. Last year Citronelle finished sixth in Class 5A region one with a 4-4 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Wildcats improved in 2023 with their first winning season since 2019. The Wildcats hope to continue the success they had last season. Coach Rowell saw improvement as they won six games following a 1-9 record in 2022.

       Citronelle was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Wildcats want to be competitive. They only averaged 18.4 points a game.

       Since 2010, Citronelle has gone a combined 55-87. Their 38.7% winning percentage ranks 40th in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Citronelle has managed to compile a record of 112-149. Their 43.0% winning percentage ranks 36th in Class 5A and 259th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
       Citronelle lost 5A All-State  athlete Justin Adams to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

Head Coach:
       The Wildcats are led by head coach Jason Rowell who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 6-4 record in his first season at Citronelle. The Wildcats saw improvement from a 1-9 record the season before coach Rowell arrived. The Wildcats have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Rowell. Over the course of his career, Coach Rowell's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of five times .

Season Outlook:

       The Citronelle Wildcats will play in Class 5A region one during the 2024 season.

      

       The Wildcats saw a big improvement in the first season under Coach Jason Rowell. Can they continue that success in 2024? Coach Rowell thinks they will. The Wildcats return six starters on offense and six on defense so the nucleus of the team will be in place this fall.

       Millry quarterback Daylon Edmunds transferred to Citronelle during the off season.

       Coach Rowell said about the 2024 Wildcats ''We will have to replace 3/5 offensive linemen. We graduated 23 seniors last year. Also need our young linebackers and secondary to grow up quickly, hopefully a seasoned defensive line will allow them time. We had a really good spring, so hopefully a great summer will propel us into a successful season. Having an experienced quarterback in Daylon Edmunds will hopefully give us a chance every Friday night.''

    The Wildcats have a good shot at one of the last two playoff slots in region one this season. Citronelle has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2019 but hope to return to the post season this year.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      QB Daylon Edmunds will join the team after transferring from Millry for his senior season after completing 102-of-160 passes for 1,601 yards and 28 TDs last season. Edmunds also ran for another 747 yards and scored 12 touchdowns.

Season Opener:
       The Wildcats open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Millry on Friday, August 23 at Memorial Stadium. Last year the Millry Wildcats finished with an overall record of 9-3 and in second place in Class 1A region one. The Wildcats lost in the second round of the Class 1A playoffs to Elba by a score of 47-28.

       Citronelle and Millry have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Wildcats have a 5-1-1 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2023 with Citronelle winning by a score of 27-26.
