 2024 Preview

Clarke County completed the 2023 season with a 7-6 record. Last year Clarke County captured the region one title and a number one seed in the Class 2A playoffs. They finished region play with a 5-0 record. Clarke County lost in the quarter-finals of the playoffs last season to a good B.B. Comer team by a score of 42-22.

Since 2010, Clarke County has gone a combined 85-75. Their 53.1% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Clarke County has managed to compile a record of 154-124. Their 55.0% winning percentage ranks 14th in Class 2A and 129th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Clarke County lost 2A All-State  athlete A.J. Ezell to graduation. He was named to the first team last season.

Head Coach:
The Bulldogs are led by head coach Rob Carter who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-6 record in his first season at Clarke County. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have won one region crown with Coach Carter. Over the course of his career, Coach Carter's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of seven times and won three region championships. Coach Carter won a state championship at Beauregard in 2016.

Season Outlook:

The Clarke County Bulldogs will play in Class 2A region one during the 2024 season.

The Bulldogs have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 2A. Their opponents had a combined record of 60-42 last season. That ranks 5th in Class 2A and 46th in the AHSAA.

The Bulldogs enter the 2024 season having won 16 straight region games.

Coach Carter will have Pugh back at quarterback for the 2024 season and that should be a great starting point for the Bulldogs in his second season in Grove Hill. The Bulldogs also return a couple of excellent linebackers so the middle of the defense should be very solid.

The Bulldogs will also open the 2024 football season without the services of running back AJ Ezell who graduated in the spring along with the 1,786 yards and 25 touchdowns he scored last year.

The Bulldogs will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs in 2023. They return seven players on offense and seven on defense in 2024 so the team should have experienced players all over the field when the season opens.

Coach Carter told us ''Clarke County returns a strong defense in '24. The experience at LB will be the strength of the defense for the upcoming season. Offensively the Dawgs will be young up front but with excellent speed at skill positions and 2nd year QB TaMyus Pugh, they should get better each week of the season.''

The Bulldogs are considered one of the favorites for the region one championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Players to Watch in 2024:
QB TaMyus Pugh will be returning for his senior season after completing 73-of-156 passes for 903 yards and 7 TDs last season. Pugh also ran for 510 yards and 8 touchdowns in 2023.

MLB Ethan Henson collected 124 tackles (69 solo) including 8 sacks and will be back for his senior season.

OLB Hayden Dotson had 139 tackles (71 solo) and will also be back for his senior season.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: TaMyus Pugh QB, DaMyon Horn WR, Jamarcus Washington RB, Charlie Jordan OL, Lucas Kelly WR/K, Alton Clark OL, Jack Fuller OL, Stan Gladney WR/RB
DEFENSE: Ethan Henson LB, John Anderson LB, Hayden Dotson LB, Cammarion Moore DL, Davion Gildersleeve LB, De'Tavious Grayson C, Jordan Haire DL
NEWCOMERS: Omarion Hammond RB, Jordan Davis DL, Jashawn Pugh WR/DB, Jordan Mack OL, Dominick Grayson OL, Isaiah Davis DB, DJ Law DL

Season Opener:
The Bulldogs open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Flomaton on Thursday, August 22 at Hurricane Field. Last year the Flomaton Hurricanes finished with an overall record of 7-5 and in fourth place in Class 3A region one. The Hurricanes lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Trinity by a score of 35-0.

Clarke County and Flomaton have met a total of 5 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 3-2-0 record against the Hurricanes. They last met in 2017 with Clarke County winning by a score of 50-14.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

In 1969 the two point conversion was adopted for play following a touchdown. Until that time all conversions were worth one point.
