 2024 Preview 


       Curry finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 1-9 record. Last year Curry finished eighth in Class 4A region five with a 0-7 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The Yellow Jackets last playoff victory came during the 1996 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

       Curry was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Yellow Jackets want to be competitive. They only averaged 15.5 points a game.

       Curry struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 48.9 points a game.

       The Yellow Jackets would prefer to forget the past two seasons as they have finished with a 3-17 record. Since 2010, the Curry football program has struggled with a record of 26-116.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Curry has not won much with a record of 51-202. Their 20.0% winning percentage ranks 64th in Class 4A and 384th in the AHSAA. The Yellow Jackets have struggled on the football field with no winning seasons during this time. Their last winning season was 1996.

Head Coach:
       The Yellow Jackets are led by head coach Jace Cordell who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 1-9 record in his first season at Curry. The Yellow Jackets have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Cordell.

Season Outlook:

       The Curry Yellow Jackets will play in Class 4A region five during the 2024 season.

      

       The Yellow Jackets have gone 27 consecutive seasons without finishing a single year winning more games than they lost. Curry has won only three games the past five seasons and had 10 different head coaches during their losing season streak. Could this be the year they break that long standing streak?

       Their non-region opponents offer opportunities for a couple of victories possibly as they take on 3A Carbon Hill, 2A Cold Springs and 2A Winston County.

       Coach Cordell wants to instill a new attitude at Curry starting this season. The Jackets have a brand new sports facility on campus and have been working hard to improve the football program. Cordell said at media days ''We want to be better at the end of the season than at the beginning.''

    This season, the Yellow Jackets will be a long shot for one of the four playoff spots in region five.

Season Opener:
       The Yellow Jackets open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Carbon Hill on Thursday, August 22 at G.W. Keith Stadium. Last year the Carbon Hill Bulldogs finished with an overall record of 0-10 and in sixth place in Class 3A region five. The Bulldogs closed out the regular season with a loss to Oak Grove by a score of 57-7.

       Curry and Carbon Hill have met a total of 76 times on the football field. The Yellow Jackets have a 31-45-0 record against the Bulldogs. They last met in 2021 with Carbon Hill winning by a score of 66-8.

Thomasville scored 54 points against Gulf Shores in the first quarter of a game in 2003. They managed to hang on for an 81-14 win.
