 2024 Preview

Highland Home completed the 2023 season with a 10-2 record. With their 6-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 2A region three, the Flying Squadron earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Highland Home reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to B.B. Comer by a score of 21-14.

The defense was very stingy last season as Highland Home ranked 5th in the AHSAA. The defense allowed only 8.3 points a game.

Over the past two seasons the Flying Squadron have Finished 22-4 and will be looking to continue that winning tradition. Since 2010, Highland Home has gone a combined 92-67. Their 57.9% winning percentage ranks 15th in Class 2A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Highland Home has managed to compile a record of 160-121. Their 57.0% winning percentage ranks 12th in Class 2A and 103rd in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Highland Home lost 2A All-State  offensive lineman Lane Duett to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate defensive back Brice McKenzie.

Coaching Change:
Will Pouncey  leaves Highland home after five seasons and a 39-22 record. He did a great job in building the football program. His last two season included 22 victories which were the most any any tow consecutive seasons in school history. A short time later he accepted a job as an assistant coach at Goshen.

2024 Head Coach:
Justin Bragg  is a 2000 graduate of Highland Home. He was an assistant at Luverne High School from 2008 to 2014 before returning to Highland Home. This will be his first head coaching job.

Season Outlook:

The Highland Home Flying Squadron will play in Class 2A region three during the 2024 season.

Highland Home enters the 2024 season with a string of 8 consecutive wins on their home field at Clay Stadium.

The Flying Squadron are coming off back-to-back ten win seasons for the first time in school history. They have lost four games the past two seasons. All four came at the hands of Reeltown and B.B. Comer. Last seasons losses were by no more than seven points in each loss so they are very close to being on par with the 2A big boys.

Highland Home will return eight starters from last season most of whom played both ways for the Flying Squadron in 2023.

First year head coach Justin Bragg told us about this year's team. ''We are returning our core group of players from last years team on offense and defense. We intend to set the tone with our defense along with establishing control offensively. We look to rely on our senior players for unity and leadership. We are excited to get the season underway.''

The Flying Squadron are considered one of the favorites for the region three championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Players to Watch in 2024:
RB Austin Crittenden will be returning after rushing for 672 yards and 10 TDs last season as a junior.

Returning Starters:

STARTERS: JJ Faulk, CJ May, Tyler Chaney, TJ Washington, Jake Duett, Jaquez Osborne, Austin Crittenden, Austin Norman
NEWCOMERS: Brody Phillips DE/TE CJ May

Season Opener:
The Flying Squadron open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Straughn on Friday, August 23 at Clay Stadium. Last year the Straughn Tigers finished with an overall record of 10-2 and in first place in Class 3A region two. The Tigers lost in the second round of the Class 3A playoffs to Thomasville by a score of 33-21.

Highland Home and Straughn have met a total of 14 times on the football field. The Flying Squadron have a 5-9-0 record against the Tigers. They last met in 2001 with Straughn winning by a score of 14-7.
