 2024 Preview

Leeds completed the 2023 season with a 9-3 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 5A region six, the Greenwave earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Leeds reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Ramsay by a score of 42-7.

Since 2010, Leeds has gone a combined 124-53. Their 70.1% winning percentage ranks 7th in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Leeds has managed to compile a record of 198-109. Their 64.0% winning percentage ranks 10th in Class 5A and 72nd in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Leeds lost 5A All-State  defensive lineman Kavion Henderson to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate defensive lineman Chris Burge.

Head Coach:
The Greenwave are led by head coach Jerry Hood who is entering his sixth season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 41-17 over the past five seasons at Leeds. Under his direction the Greenwave have qualified for the playoffs a total of four times. They have won one region crown with Coach Hood. His 144 wins rank 41st among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Hood's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twelve times and won five region championships. Coach Hood won a state championship at Clay-Chalkville in 2014.

Coach Hood needs six wins this season to reach the 150 win milestone.

Season Outlook:

The Leeds Greenwave will play in Class 5A region six during the 2024 season.

Leeds enters the 2024 season with a string of 6 consecutive wins on their home field at Homer Smiles Field.

Are the Leeds Green Wave getting back to their state championship run between 2008-2015? They have been playing great football the past few seasons but can't quite take the extra step and return to the Super 7 Championship Game. They have won at least nine games the past four seasons but have fallen short of another title each year. The last two playoff losses were to Ramsay.

This year they are joined in Region 6 by Center Point and Jacksonville making it even more difficult just to get one of the four playoff spots in the region. Not to mention they still have upstart Moody to contend with now in the region.

Leeds is still Leeds and will continue to win as long as Coach Hood is on the sidelines. They return QB Conner Nelson who padded for over 1,000 yards and ran for another 1,300 yards last season. The offensive line will have Gavin Bowlin and Carlos Placensia leading the way up front. The defense count on playmakers like James Langford and Jackie Bisho on the line along with linebackers Gavin Howard and Miles Jones. Defensive backs Miles Ashford and Reece Bittner will cover the secondary.

The Greenwave are considered one of the favorites for the region six championship this season and a home game in the first round of the playoffs.

Returning Starters:
OL Gavin Bowlin

Season Opener:
The Greenwave open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Mortimer Jordan on Friday, August 23 at Jimmie Trotter Field. Last year the Mortimer Jordan Blue Devils finished with an overall record of 8-3 and in third place in Class 6A region five. The Blue Devils lost in the first round of the Class 6A playoffs to Fort Payne by a score of 45-28.

Leeds and Mortimer Jordan have met a total of 45 times on the football field. The Greenwave have a 36-8-1 record against the Blue Devils. They last met in 2023 with Mortimer Jordan winning by a score of 31-28.
