 2024 Preview 


       Montevallo completed the 2023 season with a 7-3 record. Last year Montevallo just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region three with a 4-3 region record.

       Since 2010, Montevallo has gone a combined 74-75. Their 49.7% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 5A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Montevallo has managed to compile a record of 126-133. Their 49.0% winning percentage ranks 26th in Class 5A and 192nd in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
       Montevallo lost 4A All-State  defensive lineman Charlie Adams to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

Coaching Change:
     Blake Boren  resigned his position at Montevallo in March after four seasons where his teams produced a 26-17 record with a couple of playoff appearances during his time at the helm of the Bulldogs. He is one of only six coaches to win a playoff game in the history of the program. Montevallo defeated St. James in overtime in the first round of the 2020 Class 4A playoffs.

2024 Head Coach:
    Garrett Langer  was appointed as the interim head coach in addition to his roles as head coach of the boys soccer and wrestling programs while the school conducts a coaching search. He was the defensive coordinator last year for the Bulldogs.

Season Outlook:

       The Montevallo Bulldogs will play in Class 5A region three during the 2024 season. The Bulldogs move up in classification to Class 5A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

      

       The Bulldogs had the misfortune of winning seven games last year and still missed the playoffs. In most seasons and most regions seven wins assures a team of a playoff spot but not in 4A Region 3 in 2023. They fell into a three way tie with Sipsey Valley and West Blocton and subsequently lost the tie breaker.

       They move up to 5A and could possibly find the move to their liking. Only one team won more games than seven last year and that was Demopolis. They will also be joined by past 4A schools in Sipsey Valley and Northside this year in Region 3.

    The Bulldogs should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Montevallo came up short of the playoffs the past couple of seasons but hope to return to the post season this year.

Players to Watch in 2024:
      RB Rozario Conwell will be returning for his senior season after rushing for 1,221 yards and 15 TDs last season.

Season Opener:
       The Bulldogs open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Tarrant on Thursday, August 22 at Theron Fisher Stadium. Last year the Tarrant Wildcats finished with an overall record of 3-7 and in seventh place in Class 3A region five. The Wildcats closed out the regular season with a loss to Montevallo by a score of 41-21.

       Montevallo and Tarrant have met a total of 7 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 5-2-0 record against the Wildcats. They last met in 2023 with Montevallo winning by a score of 41-21.

Morris Higginbotham coached three different teams to divisional state championships in the 1950s. He won titles at Walnut Grove in 1952, West Blocton in 1955 and Enterprise in 1960.
