 2024 Preview

Piedmont completed the 2023 season with a 5-7 record. With their 4-3 region record and a third place finish in Class 3A region six, the Bulldogs earned a spot in the playoffs in 2023. Piedmont reached the second round of the playoffs before falling to Lauderdale County by a score of 35-30.

Piedmont took a step backwards last year with their first losing season since 2004. The Bulldogs lost as many games as in any season since 2004. The Bulldogs hope to rebound after a down year. Last season they struggled winning just five games which followed a 12-3 record in 2022.

As one of the best football programs in the state since 2010, Piedmont has gone a combined 163-31. Their 84.0% winning percentage ranks 2nd in Class 3A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 25 seasons, Piedmont has finished a combined 227-90. Their 72.0% winning percentage ranks 6th in Class 3A and 34th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Piedmont lost 3A All-State  defensive lineman Chance Murphy to graduation. He was named to the first team last season. Also graduating was teammate linebacker Luke Rhinehart.

Head Coach:
The Bulldogs are led by head coach Jonathan Miller who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 5-7 record in his first season at Piedmont. Under his direction the Bulldogs have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Miller. His 105 wins rank 60th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Miller's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of eleven times and won three region championships.

Season Outlook:

The Piedmont Bulldogs will play in Class 3A region six during the 2024 season.

The Bulldogs have one of the toughest overall schedules in Class 3A. Their opponents had a combined record of 71-43 last season. That ranks 6th in Class 3A and 27th in the AHSAA.

At one point last year it seemed the Bulldogs streak of making the playoffs would come to an end at seventeen. But there is too much pride and fight in those Bulldogs to allow that to happen. They won the games they were suppose to win in region play and squeaked into the post season.

The team was young last year but will have more experienced players back this season. Look for a rebound and a few more victories than the five games games they won last year.

The Bulldogs return seven starters from last year's team on offense and five to the defense. Experience will help Piedmont improve on their 2023 season.

Coach Miller told AHSFHS.org about this year's team at Piedmont. ''We return a good bit of our skill guys on offense. Cole Wilson has a year under his belt at QB and played well at the end of the year. Rollie Pinto returns from a knee injury and will be a key contributor. Not as experienced on the defensive side, as we lost several keys guys on that side of the ball. Should be better if we can stay healthy, 2023 was an injury riddled year.''

The Bulldogs should be in contention for a playoff spot in region six this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. They have reached the playoffs every year since 2005 and will once again be in the hunt for a spot in 2024.

Returning Starters:
OFFENSE: QB- Cole Wilson; RB- Hayes Gunn, Sr.; WR- Ish Bethel; WR- Rollie Pinto, Jr.; OL- Noah Farmer; OL- Chris Parris; OL- Braylen Williams
DEFENSE: LB- Brodie Homesley, Sr.; OLB- Kale Austin; OLB- Caleb Tidwell, Sr.; DB- Davion Stitts; DB- Demetrius Owen, Sr.; K/P- Chase Cardelli, Jr.
NEWCOMERS: DL- Eli Young; LB- Bentley Chandler; LB- Chase Kirkpatrick; DB- Carson Sanders; DB- Ben Dempsey

Season Opener:
The Bulldogs open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Cherokee County on Friday, August 23 at Warriors Stadium/Johnson Field. Last year the Cherokee County Warriors finished with an overall record of 13-2 and in first place in Class 4A region six. The Warriors lost in the Class 4A State Championship game last season when they were defeated by Catholic Montgomery. They final score was 35-0 in the Super Seven finals in Birmingham.

Piedmont and Cherokee County have met a total of 81 times on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 39-39-3 record against the Warriors. They last met in 2023 with Cherokee County winning by a score of 26-7.
