 2024 Preview 


       Sheffield finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 3-7 record. Last year Sheffield finished sixth in Class 2A region eight with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

       The defense allowed a team record 381 points last season.

       Sheffield struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 38.1 points a game.

       Since 2010, Sheffield has gone a combined 69-82. Their 45.7% winning percentage ranks 38th in Class 3A over the past fourteen seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Sheffield has managed to compile a record of 129-142. Their 48.0% winning percentage ranks 32nd in Class 3A and 218th in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
       Sheffield lost 2A All-State  receiver Austin Stutts to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

Coaching Change:
     Brian Dickerson  leaves Sheffield after only two seasons with a 8-12 record.

2024 Head Coach:
    Johnny Wright  arrives at Sheffield with 28 years of head coaching experience in Alabama. He a veteran coach with 191 victories under his belt at six different schools. Most recently he was the head coach at Dora (2012-2014). He spent thirteen seasons in Sheffield with a record of 72-70 with nine playoff appearances. His 191 wins rank 18th among active coaches in the AHSAA. Over the course of his career, Coach Wright's teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of twenty-one times and won ten region championships.

       Coach Wright needs nine wins this season to reach the coveted 200 win milestone.

Season Outlook:

       The Sheffield Bulldogs will play in Class 3A region seven during the 2024 season. The Bulldogs move up in classification to Class 3A. They may find the going slightly tougher with the move.

      

       The Bulldogs have missed the playoffs the past four seasons and have not won a playoff games since the 2016 football season. Veteran Coach Johnny Wright makes his return appearance in Sheffield so things may be looking up for the Bulldogs in 2024.

    The Bulldogs will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region seven this season.

Season Opener:
       The Bulldogs open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Decatur Heritage Christian on Friday, August 23 at Rebels Stadium, West Morgan. Last year the Decatur Heritage Christian Eagles finished with an overall record of 9-2 and in first place in Class 1A region seven. The Eagles lost in the first round of the Class 1A playoffs to Winterboro by a score of 42-37.

       This will be the second meeting between Sheffield and Decatur Heritage Christian on the football field. The Bulldogs have a 0-1-0 record against the Eagles. They last met in with
