 2024 Preview

Spain Park completed the 2023 season with a 7-3 record. Last year Spain Park just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 7A region three with a 4-3 region record.

The Jaguars improved in 2023 with their first winning season since 2017. The Jaguars won as many games as in any season since 2016.

Since 2010, Spain Park has gone a combined 85-68. Their 55.6% winning percentage ranks 25th in Class 6A over the past fourteen seasons.

Over the past 22 seasons, Spain Park has managed to compile a record of 142-103. Their 58.0% winning percentage ranks 22nd in Class 6A and 111st in the AHSAA.

Graduated All-State Players:
Spain Park lost 7A All-State  receiver Jonathan Bibbs to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

Head Coach:
The Jaguars are led by head coach Tim Vakakes who is entering his third season at the helm. He has compiled a record of 10-10 over the past two seasons at Spain Park. The Jaguars have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Vakakes. Over the course of his career, Coach Vakakes' teams have qualified for the playoffs a total of three times and won one region championship.

Season Outlook:

The Spain Park Jaguars will play in Class 6A region three during the 2024 season. The Jaguars may find the schedule slightly easier this season with the move down in classification from Class 7A to 6A. They will compete in region three this year.

The Jaguars enter the 2024 season riding a 5 game regular season winning streak.

The Jaguars are looking forward to the move from 7A down to 6A this season. They move from one of the toughest regions in the state to one where only two of the schools even qualified for the playoffs last year (Benjamin Russell and Helena). The prospects to grab one of the four possible playoffs spots is almost assured for the talented bunch at Spain Park in 2024.

The Jaguars return their starting quarterback from last year in junior Brock Bradley. Look for them to be more than just a little competitive in region three and give Helena and Benjamin Russell a run for their money at the region championship.

Spain Park will need to do some rebuilding as they return only four starters from last season on offense and just three to the defense.

The Jaguars should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. Hosting a first round playoff game on their home turf would be an advantage. Spain Park has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2017 but have hopes of returning to the post season this year.

Players to Watch in 2024:
Brock Bradley will return at QB in 2024 after completing 127-of-210 passes for 1,845 yards and 22 TDs last season as a sophomore.

WR Reggie Jackson caught 20 passes for 347 yards and six receiving touchdowns after playing in only seven games due to injury will also return in 2024.

Returning Starters:
QB Brock Bradley, WR Reggie Jackson, CB Arnold Bush, DT/NG Landon Johnson, DE/DT Nikolas Alston
NEWCOMERS: 25 DB- Brayden Matherson; 25 TE- Henry Gregory; 26 DE- Christian Smith; 26 LB- EJ Kerley

Season Opener:
The Jaguars open the 2024 season at home against non-region opponent Sparkman on Friday, August 23 at Jaguar Stadium at Bob Finley Field. Last year the Sparkman Senators finished with an overall record of 5-5 and in fifth place in Class 7A region four. The Senators closed out the regular season with a loss to Muscle Shoals by a score of 48-7.

Spain Park and Sparkman have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Jaguars have a 3-1-0 record against the Senators. They last met in 2005 with Sparkman winning by a score of 21-18.
