2024 Preview | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
St. John Paul II completed the 2023 season with a 4-6 record. Last year St. John Paul II just missed making the playoffs with a fifth place finish in Class 4A region eight with a 3-4 region record. St. John Paul II is a relatively new football program having fielded a team only twelve seasons. They have managed a record of 32-89 over the past twelve years. Over the past 12 seasons, St. John Paul II has not won much with a record of 32-89. Their 26.0% winning percentage ranks 60th in Class 4A and 366th in the AHSAA. The Falcons have struggled on the football field with only two winning seasons during this time. Graduated All-State Players: St. John Paul II lost 4A All-State athlete Luke Songy to graduation. He was named to the second team last season. Also graduating was teammate kicker Tyler Greges. Coaching Change: Chad OMelia served as the head coach at St. John Paul II for only one season and his team finished last season with a 4-6 record. 2024 Head Coach: Kevin Creehan will be the fifth Falcons head coach in five seasons. His hope is to first bring some stability to the coaching staff before embarking on building a football program for the Falcon fans. He comes from a coaching family and has coached for seven seasons at the collegiate level. He served last season as an assistant coach for the Falcons. Season Outlook: The St. John Paul II Falcons will play in Class 4A region eight during the 2024 season. The Falcons will need to find a replacement for graduated quarterback Luke Songy and his 1,734 yards passing. But Coach Creehan thinks he has one in junior Joey Ross. The Falcons return five starters on offense and five on defense plus a few newcomers who will be counted upon to contribute. St. John Paul II has seen six head coaches over the course of the past six seasons so stability at the top is going to be important for the future of the football program. The Falcons finished fifth the past two seasons so they were only one win away from a playoff spot both years. Coach Creehan told AHSFHS.org ''After back-to-back 4-6 seasons, the Falcons are looking to take the next step in the growth of the program. Replacing the loss of an All-State QB and other key seniors will be critical to the team's success. '' The Falcons could find themselves challenging for one of the playoff spots for region eight this season with a few breaks and a little improvement. St. John Paul II has failed to qualify for the playoffs since 2019 but hope to return to the post season this year. Players to Watch in 2024: WR Austin Porter will be back for his senior season after catching 20 passes for 566 yards and 7 TDs in 2023. WR Mark Andrzejewski will be back for his junior season after catching 23 passes for 364 yards and 4 TDs in 2023. Returning Starters: OFFENSE:RB - Austin Porter (Sr.), WR - Mark Andrzejewski (Jr.), WR - Parker Kummer (Sr.), G - Alexis Duran (Sr.), C - Logan Roth (So.) DEFENSE: DT - Jerry Leslie (Jr.), DT - Andrew Lang (Sr.), DE - Christian Maroyka (Jr.), OLB - Austin Porter (Sr.), FS - JonLuc Bechen (Jr.) NEWCOMERS: QB - Joey Ross (Jr.), TE/LB - Isaac Lee (Jr.), WR/DB - Kemper Hopkins (Sr.) Season Opener: The Falcons open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Elkmont on Friday, August 23 at Boss Hill Stadium. Last year the Elkmont Red Devils finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 3A region eight. The Red Devils closed out the regular season with a loss to St. John Paul II by a score of 42-20. St. John Paul II and Elkmont have met a total of 3 times on the football field. The Falcons have a 2-1-0 record against the Red Devils. They last met in 2023 with St. John Paul II winning by a score of 42-20. | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
