 2024 Preview

Woodlawn finished the 2023 season with a disappointing 2-7 record. Last year Woodlawn finished sixth in Class 6A region five with a 1-5 region record and failed to qualify for the playoffs.

The Colonels have not qualified for the playoffs since the 2011 season and would love to end that streak this year. The Colonels last playoff victory came during the 1994 season. They would love to break through this year with a post season win.

Woodlawn was inconsistent offensively last year and they need some improvement if the Colonels want to be competitive. They only averaged 14.2 points a game.

Woodlawn struggled on the defensive side of the football last year. The defense found little success in stopping opposing offenses as they gave up an average of 39.8 points a game.

Since 2010, the Woodlawn football program has struggled with a record of 30-110.

Over the past 25 seasons, Woodlawn has not won much with a record of 55-193. Their 22.0% winning percentage ranks 57th in Class 6A and 378th in the AHSAA. The Colonels have struggled on the football field with only three winning seasons during this time.

Graduated All-State Players:
Woodlawn lost 6A All-State  punter Micheal Givihan to graduation. He was named to the second team last season.

Head Coach:
The Colonels are led by head coach Clarence Williams who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 2-7 record in his first season at Woodlawn. The Colonels have yet to reach the playoffs under his direction. They have not won a region crown with Coach Williams.

Season Outlook:

The Woodlawn Colonels will play in Class 6A region five during the 2024 season.

After just a 2-7 record last year the Colonels will be working hard to improve upon that record this season. In 2024 the Colonels will face seven teams that qualified for the playoffs last year. A rather difficult non-region slate includes Shades Valley, Bessemer City, Hartselle and Center Point.

Woodlawn will return a veteran group of players on both sides of the football. Eight players will be back for fall camp on both offense and defense. The added experience will give the Colonels a chance to compete in region five.

Coach Williams told us ''We expect to make the playoffs for 1st time since 2011. Team is mostly 2026 & 2027. Only 6 members of the 2025 class started in the Spring Game''. He has high hopes that a few newcomers to the football program can contribute to a successful season led by quarterback Andre Russell, DB KeJiaun Johnson and DL Fernandez Sturdivant.

The Colonels will need to win a few more games this fall if they hope to grab one of the four playoff slots in region five this season. After just 2 wins last year, Woodlawn will be hoping to become more competitive in the region.

Returning Starters:

NEWCOMERS: QB - Andre Russell, DB - KeJiaun Johnson and DL - Fernandez Sturdivant

Season Opener:
The Colonels open the 2024 season on the road against non-region opponent Shades Valley on Friday, August 23 at Frank A. Nix Memorial Athletic Complex. Last year the Shades Valley Mounties finished with an overall record of 4-5 and in fifth place in Class 6A region six.

Woodlawn and Shades Valley have met a total of 31 times on the football field. The Colonels have a 13-18-0 record against the Mounties. They last met in 2021 with Shades Valley winning by a score of 35-13.
