Week Two

The 2018 season is underway and next weekend opens region play for most teams. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action around the state.

   *  Sweet Water held the longest winning streak in the state for seven days before falling to rival Thomasville 28-14 on Friday night. UMS-Wright takes over as the team with the longest winning streak in the AHSAA having posted 7 consecutive victories after defeating Mobile Christian by a score of 37-7. Monroe Academy leads the AISA with a 16 game winning streak following a 18-16 win over Bessemer Academy.

   *   Barbour County has a string of forty-two consecutive losses over the past few years. They did not play this week.

   *   Bullock County has lost 58 consecutive region games but do not begin region play until next week.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils have won 29 straight regular season games after beating Geraldine 41-7 on Friday.

   *   Maplesville has a streak of 53 consecutive region wins. The Red Devils open region play next week.

   *   The Volunteers of Monroe Academy have a string of 35 consecutive home wins. Fyffe leads the AHSAA schools with a 24 game home winning streak.

   *   McGill-Toolen has won 18 consecutive road games.

   *   Maplesville has scored twenty or more points in 51 consecutive games.

   *   Fyffe hopes to avoid the dreaded shutout and extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 235 games without being shutout.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 199 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs opened the 2018 season in a very familiar spot as the #1 team in 7A.

   *  There were some notable shutouts this week around the state. Brewer shutout Danville 42-0. It is their first shutout since the 199 season when they blanked Fairview 28-0 some 190 games ago. Florence shutout Buckhorn to record only their third shutout in school history. It had been 142 games since they held Wilson scoreless in 2005. Carbon Hill shutout Dora to record their first shutout since defeating Cordova 17-0 in 2004.

   *  Foley was shutout for the third consecutive game. Something that had not happened since the 1970 football season.

   *  We missed it last week but when UMS-Wright shutout St. Paul's it marked the first time in 127 games the Saints had failed to score.
