Week Seven

The 2019 season is flying by it seems. One more month until the playoffs begin. The region championships are beginning to take shape as teams via for playoff spots. Here are a few tidbits and notes from this week's action.

   *  UMS-Wright owns the state's longest winning streak at twenty-five games. The Bulldogs pulled away from Hillcrest Evergreen and won 28-14.

   *   Barbour County extended their state leading fifty-six game losing streak in a 67-30 loss to Houston County.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 42 consecutive region games and the streak will continue following a 51-0 loss to Sylvania this week.

   *  The Fyffe Red Devils have won 44 straight regular season games following a 55-0 shutout win over Sand Rock.

   *   The Red Devils also have the longest region winning streak having won 30 straight region contests.

   *   The Volunteers of Monroe Academy lead all schools with a string of 43 consecutive home wins after defeating 34-28 on the road. Fyffe leads the AHSAA schools with a 34 game home winning streak after their latest victory on their home turf.

   *   UMS-Wright holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 14 consecutive after defeating Hillcrest on the road. Chambers Academy leads the AISA schools with a streak of 25 straight road victories following their 48-12 win over Success Unlimited on the road.

   *   Fyffe also has the longest current streak for scoring 20 or more points in a game. The Red Devils have put up at least 20 points in 52 consecutive games dating back to 2015.

   *   Fyffe continues to extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 254 games without being shutout.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 215 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.

   *   This week ten teams scored more than 60 points in a game. The lowest in several weeks. There have been 64 games among the AHSAA and AISA schools where at least one team scored 60 points.

   *   Montevallo outscored West Blocton 62-50 on Friday night. Why bring this up? Well, Montevallo seems to score almost at will every game but has struggled to slow the opposition down. The Bulldogs are 4-2 on the season and have played in four games where both teams scored over 100 points. They beat Shelby County 56-50, Jemison 68-40, lost to American Christian 30-84 before the latest high scoring affair. They are averaging 46.3 points a game but allowing 48.7. I bet the games are exciting to watch.

   *   Here is a crazy metric to ponder. If we consider the most points scored and allowed for any team ever, which team combined for the most points in a season? So we simply combine the points scored and the points allowed for every team. The 2014 Clay-Chalkville team scored 731 points and allowed 327 points for a total of 1,058 total points scored by both teams in 15 games. That is the record. Phillips Bear Creek in 2008 played eleven games and the combined points for both teams in those games averaged 85.2 per game. Montevallo is averaging 95.0 points scored by both teams in their six contests this year. They are on pace to eclipse both records.

   *   Barbour County has allowed 386 points through six games. That is a record pace of 64.3 points a game. J.F. Shields holds the record for points allowed in a season with 630 in 2016. They have lost 56 consecutive games dating back to 2013.

   *   Winston County was shutout by Aliceville 39-0. It is the first shutout the Yellow Jackets have suffered since losing 42-0 to Haleyville in 2011 some 81 games ago.

   *   Alabama is 28-25 against out of state competition this season. They are 12-8 against Georgia, 6-7 against Florida, 7-5 versus Mississippi and 3-5 against Tennessee.

   *   Coach Toby Greene won the 100th game in his football coaching career as Florala defeated Red Level 52-7. Coach Greene is in his 18th season as a head coach at Rehobeth, Muscle Shoals, Geneva County, Cottonwood and Florala. He has compiled a record of 100-89 over the course of his coaching career.
