THIS WEEK IN ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

AHSFHS.org Report
(Oct. 23, 2021)

Week Ten

All but seven regions are determined in the AHSAA. The playoff teams are almost set. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action in Alabama.

   *   The unthinkable happened Friday night. Thompson was beaten by the Hoover Bucs. Hoover scored in the final two minutes to overcome a 21-10 halftime deficit for the victory. Thompson quarterback Conner Harrell did not play in the second half.

   *   In other key matchups this week, Spanish Fort defeated McGill-Toolen 35-14, Decatur beat Austin 56-34, Alexandria surprised Leeds 43-7 and Pike Road shutout Greenville 44-0.

   *   Only one forfeit this week as J.F. Shields sat out again this week due to Covid concerns handing a victory to Keith. AL.com was reporting that Leroy may forfeit a game or games but no confirmation on that just yet.

   *   Alabama is 35-34 against out-of-state competition in 2021. That includes 11-9 against Georgia, 8-8 against Florida, 9-5 against Tennessee but 6-11 against Mississippi. One note is that these records include the 6 man and 8 man football schools.

   *   Helena, James Clemens and Spring Garden continue to put up victories and are undefeated on the season. It is the first time for each of these schools. James Clemens wrapped up their first undefeated regular season with a 62-20 win over Albertville. The Huskies of Helena will have to wait a week before doing the same against a very good UMS-Wright team in Mobile. Spring Garden will have a tough task in taking on Wadley next week.

   *   Luverne (7-1) will host Orange Beach in the first round of the playoffs in two weeks. The Tigers have qualified for the post season the past 39 seasons. The last time they did not reach the playoffs was 1982. That is a state record.

   *   Gordo has assured themselves of another winning season, their 29th in a row. The Green Wave are 7-2 on the season. That too is the longest active streak in Alabama.

   *   Catholic Montgomery (10-0) continues to dominate every opponent. The Knights have shutout seven opponents and outscored them all 501-20.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 241 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs will likely assume the top spot this week in the polls after defeating Thompson.

   *   The Thompson Warriors held onto the state's longest winning streak for seven days before losing. Now five teams are tied at the top with ten consecutive victories. Catholic Montgomery, Hartselle, Hoover, James Clemens and Winfield all have finished the regular season undefeated. That group will grow next week when others join them.

   *   Columbia is in the middle of a sixty-two game losing streak following a 46-0 loss to Hazel Green Friday night. The Eagles closed out their sixth consecutive 0-10 football season.

   *   Lanett has won 33 straight region games after beating Horseshoe Bend 57-7.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 56 consecutive region games after an open date this week. The Lions fell to Plainview 57-21.

   *   Pike Road has the longest regular season winning streak at 28 games following a 44-0 thumping of Greenville to secure their third straight region title.

   *   Fyffe has put together a string of 52 consecutive home wins. The Red Devils got back on the winning track with a 54-0 victory over Asbury. Their next home contest will be against Scottsboro in their season finale next week.

   *   Guntersville, a  48-6 winner over Albertville, holds the longest road winning streaks now at eleven games.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 287 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Abbeville was shutout by G.W. Long 41-0. It was the first time in 77 games they have not scored a point.

   *   Trent Taylor, the head football coach at Andalusia, got win number 250 this week as the Bulldogs defeated Carroll 48-24 on the road. During his 34 year career at Kinston, Straughn and Andalusia Coach Taylor has a record of 250-144.

   *   Hugh Fountain at Escambia Academy also got win number 250 in his career as the Cougars beat Southern Academy 41-15 at home. His career has spanned 34 years at Evergreen, W.S. Neal, Charles Henderson prior to Escambia Academy. His overall record stands at 250-132.

   *   The Florence Falcons defeated Grissom 62-6 handing Coach Wade Waldrop the 100th win of his sixteen year career. His record is 100-73 at Chelsea, James Clemens and Florence since 2006.

   *   Coach Roger McDonald also got the 100th victory of his career as the Dadeville Tigers crushed Beulah 40-0 on Friday. Coach McDonald has a record of 100-68 at Beauregard, Valley, Carroll and Dadeville.
