THIS WEEK IN ALABAMA HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL

AHSFHS.org Report
(Sep. 18, 2021)

Week Five

Here we are after five weeks of football action. The playoffs will be here before we know it. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action in Alabama.

   *   The more things change, the more they remain the same. Fyffe and Thompson continue to roll. We learned a lot about some teams this week who we thought were contenders but that proved to be fiction. We still wonder if up and coming teams like Keith, Ariton, Helena, Northridge, West Blocton, Randolph, Central Florence, Parker and Southeastern can continue their early season winning ways. We will know more in a month or so.

   *   The 2021 season rolled into the fifth week of games with another five forfeits.
    Park Crossing forfeits to Eufaula
    Columbia forfeits to Hartselle
    Jasper forfeits to Gardendale
    Calhoun forfeits to Thorsby
    A.L. Johnson forfeits to Keith

   *   Vigor takes on Mobile Christian, Valley takes on Sidney Lanier and Elberta travels to B.C. Rain Saturday. I will post the scoring averages following those games.

   *   Alabama is 15-14 against out-of-state competition in 2021. That includes 7-7 against Georgia, 4-1 against Florida, 3-2 against Tennessee but 0-3 against Mississippi.

   *   The top ranked Thompson Warriors continue to cruise after defeating #4 Hewitt-Trussville 42-9. The Warriors have outscored five opponents 259-12. The Warrior defense proved to be somewhat human as they allowed the first touchdown of the season. They have won 23 straight games.

   *   In other big games this weekend, #2 Hoover continued their winning ways by defeating #9 Oak Mountain 28-21. #4 American Christian defeated #6 Bibb County 34-12. #4 Maplesville shutout #6 Loachapoka 49-0. # 8 Ariton got by #1 G.W. Long 27-21. And #5 Central Phenix City beat #8 Enterprise 36-27.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 236 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.

   *   All six top ranked teams that played this week won and did so convincingly. So no big shake up at the top of the polls.

   *   Fyffe has a string of forty-nine consecutive victories following a 56-0 victory over Brindlee Mountain. The Red Devils have a shot at the all-time record for the longest winning streak in Alabama if they can win another seven games. Clay County won 55 straight games between 1994-1997. Verbena won 50 games in a row almost 70 years ago.

   *   Columbia with a fifty-seven game losing streak will try to break that unwanted honor next week after forfeiting to Hartselle.

   *   Fyffe has a streak of 42 consecutive region wins. The Red Devils have an open date this week before hosting Plainview the following week.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 53 consecutive region games after falling to Fyffe 56-0 over the weekend.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils have won 62 consecutive regular season games. That is the state record.

   *   Fyffe has also put together a string of 51 consecutive home wins. Their next home contest will be against Plainview.

   *   Fyffe also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 18 consecutive road games after winning at home this week.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 283 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Coach Rod Hudson won the 100th game of his head coaching career. He has been the head coach at Hackleburg for 12 seasons and has an overall record of 100-45. All but one of his teams have qualified for a playoff spot. The Panthers defeated Cherokee 40-8 Friday night.

   *   Coach Bruce Breland also has reached the 100 win mark as Victory Christian beat Talladega County Central 42-0. His record at seven different schools in 100-123 in 22 seasons as a head football coach.

   *   Helena, Randolph, Southeastern and James Clemens have never gotten this far into a season undefeated. While all are newer programs they still deserve recognition.

   *   Deshler has found the going tough thus far in 2021. The Tigers are 0-5 for the first time since the 1957 football season. They take on Wilson in two weeks following an open date.

   *   If Vigor can defeat Mobile Christian on Saturday they will reach the 500 win mark. The Wolves first played football in 1959 and have an overall record of 499-275-12 since that time.

   *   Cordova has amassed 599 victories since first fielding a football team back in 1925. After falling to Ramsay 33-20 this week, the Blue Devils will shoot for number 600 against Wenonah in two weeks.
