AHSFHS.org Report
(Oct. 2, 2021)

Week Seven

Region races are taking form as teams jockey for the playoff slots. It is hard to believe we only have another four weeks in the regular season. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action in Alabama.

   *   In a week of upsets, some teams escaped with a victory, some teams took care of business as usual and some teams could not avoid the upset bug this week. Here are some of the big games this week.

   *   The taking care of business teams:
Madison Academy took care of Randolph 42-16
Clay-Chalkville ran over Jackson-Olin 46-14
Hoover defeated Hewitt-Trussville 34-10
Thompson took care of Vestavia Hills 49-7
Fyffe Beat Plainview 45-19
UMS-Wright came back to defeat Faith Academy 34-26
Central Phenix City got by Auburn 21-7
Handley came from behind to beat Jacksonville 35-20

   *   The upsets:
#2 Piedmont was upset by Ohatchee 28-24
Saraland surprised #1 Spanish Fort 28-16
Section shocked #6 Falkville on the road by a score of 21-6
#4 Flomaton fell to Bayside Academy 28-21
Jackson surprised #5 Williamson 30-12

   *   For the first time since the end of the 2019 football season there were no cancellations or forfeitures this week. Let us hope this trend continues in the future.

   *   In the only Saturday game Smiths Station travels to Jeff Davis.

   *   Alabama is 22-26 against out-of-state competition in 2021. That includes 9-8 against Georgia, 7-5 against Florida, 4-4 against Tennessee but 1-9 against Mississippi.

   *   Helena and James Clemens are 7-0 on the season. It is the first time for each of these schools.

   *   The top ranked Thompson Warriors continue to cruise after defeating Vestavia Hills 49-7. The Warriors have outscored seven opponents 359-19 and have won 25 straight games.

   *   Catholic Montgomery (7-0) continues to roll through every opponent. The Knights have shutout five opponents and outscored them all 349-13.

   *   Class 7A region three is proving once again to be among the strongest in the state in 2021. They are 16-4 against non-region opponents. The top five teams are 14-0.

   *   Not far behind is 1A region four with a non-region record of 16-5. Maplesville and Notasulga are both undefeated this season.

   *   On the other end resides 5A region 3. The seven schools are 4-17 against non-region foes and not a single team is above the .500 mark this year.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 238 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs rolled over Hewitt-Trussville 34-10.

   *   The only number one team to lose was Spanish Fort to Saraland. It is likely Clay-Chalkville will assume the top spot in 6A. The Cougars were last at the top of the 6A poll near the beginning of the 2016 season.

   *   Fyffe has a string of fifty consecutive victories following their win over Plainview. The Red Devils have a shot at the all-time record for the longest winning streak in Alabama if they can win another seven games. Clay County won 55 straight games between 1994-1997. Verbena won 50 games in a row almost 70 years ago. The Red Devils now have the longest winning streak in the nation after Columbia in Pennsylvania lost on Friday.

   *   Columbia is in the middle of a fifty-nine game losing streak following a 45-8 loss to Buckhorn.

   *   Fyffe has a streak of 43 consecutive region wins. The Red Devils host North Sand Mountain next Friday night in a non-region game.

   *   Brindlee Mountain has lost 54 consecutive region games after falling to Geraldine 53-0 in a region game.

   *   The Fyffe Red Devils have won 63 consecutive regular season games. That is the state record.

   *   Fyffe has also put together a string of 52 consecutive home wins. Their next home contest will be against Scottsboro in their season finale.

   *   Fyffe also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 18 consecutive road games.

   *   Fyffe did extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 284 games without being shutout. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   Moody shutout St. Clair County 63-0. It was the most points scored in a game and the largest margin of victory ever for the Blue Devils. It also broke a string of 127 games without a shutout for the defense dating back to a 21-0 victory over Talladega in 2009.

   *   Trent Taylor, the head football coach at Andalusia, will be looking for win number 250 next week when the Bulldogs take on Crestview FL at home. During his 34 year career at Kinston, Straughn and Andalusia Coach Taylor has a record of 249-142-0.

   *   Sylacauga, off to a 4-2 start this year under first year head coach Rob Carter won the 600th game in school history as the Aggies rolled past Elmore County 42-24.

   *   Cordova has amassed 599 victories since first fielding a football team back in 1925. Following their fourth straight loss, the Blue Devils will shoot for number 600 against Carver Birmingham next week.

   *   Interim head coach Chris Findley took over the duties from Scott Martin at Ohatchee two weeks ago. Coach Martin went 2-2 to start the season for the Indians.
