AHSFHS.org Report
(Oct. 16, 2021)

Week Nine

Just two weeks remain in the regular season before the playoffs begin. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action in Alabama.

   *   How do we start this week without mentioning that Geraldine (5-3) upset Fyffe Friday night by a score of 20-19. It snaps the nation's longest winning streak at 51 games. It also stops a string of 43 consecutive region wins and 64 straight regular season games. Fyffe had not lost a game since November 2017.

   *   In key matchups this week, Catholic Montgomery ran over Trinity 52-7, Guntersville got by Boaz 45-17, Clay-Chalkville outscored Pinson Valley by a score of 42-23 and Fairhope defeated Baker 27-17 in a key 7A contest.

   *   Many teams have wrapped up region championships already.
7A - Central Phenix City, James Clemens
6A - Saraland, Opelika, Helena, Hueytown, Mt. Brook, Clay-Chalkville, Hartselle
5A - UMS-Wright, Central Clay County, Pleasant Grove, Guntersville, Russellville

   *   Upsets this week include; Rogers over West Limestone 14-13, Anniston over Handley 28-27, Elba over Ariton 41-25 and Straughn over Alabama Christian 19-17.

   *   Only one forfeit this week as J.F. Shields sat the week out due to Covid concerns handing a victory to Central Hayneville.

   *   The Vigor and Williamson game at Ladd-Peebles Stadium was stopped with less than six minutes remaining after gunshots were fired outside the stadium. Come on people. Act like human beings when students and players are around at these high school events. This is happening way too often this year. The game will resume likely Monday.

   *   Alabama is 28-33 against out-of-state competition in 2021. That includes 11-9 against Georgia, 8-8 against Florida, 6-5 against Tennessee but 2-11 against Mississippi.

   *   Helena and James Clemens continue to put up victories and are 9-0 on the season. It is the first time for each of these schools. James Clemens will try to wrap up their first undefeated regular season next week against Albertville. The Huskies of Helena will have to wait a week before doing the same against a very good UMS-Wright team in Mobile.

   *   The top ranked Thompson Warriors continue to roll toward the playoffs after defeating Oak Mountain 48-0. The Warriors have outscored eight opponents 448-26 and have won 27 straight games.

   *   Catholic Montgomery (9-0) continues to dominate every opponent. The Knights have shutout six opponents and outscored them all 445-20.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 240 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs rolled over rival Tuscaloosa County 49-7. Next week the game of the year will be played in Hoover as the Bucs take on the top ranked Thompson Warriors.

   *   Two top ranked teams fell as Fyffe lost to Geraldine and Handley lost to Anniston.
