Week Five Tidbits & Records


The region races are full swing and we are nearing the halfway point of the season. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  The AFHSHS.org Power Ratings Top Ten and the scoring averages for every team will be available Sunday. If you missed any of the football action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything.

   *  Seems it was a week of milestones as several schools recorded landmark victories over the weekend. The Auburn Tigers defeated Lee Montgomery 58-7 to reach the 600th win in the school's history. The first recorded game for the Tigers took place way back in 1911 with a loss to Sidney Lanier. Their overall record stands at 600-390-35.

   *  Mountain Brook won the 400th game in their history since beginning to play football in 1966 when the school opened. The Spartans kept rolling by knocking off Jackson-Olin 41-0. Their record is 400-239-1. Calera and Highland Home also joined the list of schools with 400 victories.

   *  Thirteen ranked teams lost this week and four of those losses were to other ranked schools. The biggest upset had to be Prattville knocking off #3 Opelika 24-21. Haleyville also shocked #4 Northside 35-27 in 4A.

   *  Want some close games? UMS-Wright the number one team in 5A held on the defeat #8 Vigor 10-7. Tuscaloosa County scored on an untimed down the defeat Oak Mountain 34-31 in a wild finish. Helena intercepted a pass in overtime to preserve a 31-24 victory over Pelham.

   *  #6 Hoover defeated #5 Hewitt-Trussville Friday night in the biggest game in 7A.

   *   Huntsville defeated #8 Bob Jones 28-24 for their first victory over a ranked team since 2012.

   *  Southeastern is 4-0 on the season. It is their best start ever. Arab is 5-0 for the first time since 1949. Corner is 4-0 for the first time since the 1981 football season.

   *  Did you notice? In the highest scoring game of the week Southeastern outscored Holly Pond 57-53. No less than eleven teams topped the 60 point mark on offense. Jacksonville thumped Talladega 76-21 and Reeltown beat a hapless Barbour County squad 76-0.

   *  Alabama teams are a combined 19-23 vs. out-of-state competition. They were 7-13 against Georgia, 8-5 vs. Florida, 3-1 vs. Tennessee and 1-4 against Mississippi.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 253 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.

   *  The Clay-Chalkville Cougars have begun the 2022 football season by extending the state's longest winning streak at twenty straight games. The Cougars defeated Center Point 56-19.

   *   Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 66 straight contests. The Eagles took the week off and will return to play this week at home against Tanner. Columbia could surpass the state's longest losing streak in history held by R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a row. The Eagles have allowed at least 38 points in 39 consecutive games dating back to the 2018 football season.

   *   American Christian with a string of 31 straight region victories will take over the lead for consecutive region wins. The Patriots defeated Hale County 41-26 in  a region game Friday night. Mars Hill (29) is next up.

   *   Barbour County has lost 55 straight region contests after losing to Reeltown 76-0.

   *   Catholic Montgomery now leads the state with a streak of 18 consecutive regular season victories. The Knights beat Geneva 62-0.

   *   Clay-Chalkville has won a state leading 17 straight games at home.

   *   Guntersville holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 14 consecutive road games. The Wildcats defeated Boaz 62-14 at home.

   *   Fyffe extended their streak of consecutive games scoring to 295 games after beating Section 54-0. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354 games.

   *   The Elba Tigers have won 599 games since 1922 according to our records. They will be going for win number 600 next week against Providence Christian at home.

 * Reeltown set a team record in a win 76-0 over Barbour County breaking the previous record set in a victory over St. Jude 67-14 on 10/17/2008.

 * Dothan High set a team record in a win 57-43 over Smiths Station breaking the previous record set in a victory over Godby FL 56-13 on 10/18/2019.

 * Reeltown set a team record by defeating Barbour County 76-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Mount Olive 64-0 on 10/23/1981.

 * Sumiton Christian set a team record by defeating Brilliant 49-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Woodville 48-0 on 9/17/2021.

 * Waterloo set a team record in a loss 69-0 to Addison breaking the previous record set when they lost to Addison 63-0 on 9/10/2010.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Hamilton shutout an amazing 14 consecutive opponents from 1928-1930. A streak that will never be matched in modern football.
