The region races are taking shape as we pass the halfway point of the season. Here are a few tidbits
from this week's action.
* The AFHSHS.org Power Ratings Top Ten and the scoring averages for every team will be available
by Sunday. If you
missed any of the football action we will give you a weekly rundown of everything.
* Central Phenix City lost to IMG Academy of Florida 41-26 but the game was
much closer until the fourth quarter. Losing to IMG is never a bad thing. They
should not be compared to any other high school football program.
* The two biggest games of the week were between 7A and 6A schools.
Thompson held on the defeat top ranked Clay-Chalkville 17-14 and Hoover defeated
Mountain Brook 26-14.
* Nineteen ranked teams lost this week but nine of those
losses were to other ranked schools. While a lot of ranked teams lost this week
there were not any games considered major upsets this week. #1 Piedmont fell to
#5 Anniston 30-28 along with the loss by #1 Clay-Chalkville to Thompson.
* Excel knocked off #8 J.U. Blacksher. It is their first victory over a
ranked team since the 1999 football season when the beat #10 Frisco City 20-0.
* Want some close games? Decatur Heritage Christian missed a field goal with
a few seconds remaining in the game to fall to New Hope 48-47 in a thriller.
Williamson stopped Blount on fourth and goal from the three with 13 seconds to
go to pull out a 12-6 victory.
* I've been hearing some talk about 6A being better than 7A. Huh? Well the
6A schools do hold a 26-23 advantage this season between the two classifications
but the Thompson win over Clay-Chalkville and Hoover over Mountain Brook may
quiet that talk this week.
* Southeastern is 5-0 on the season. It is their best start ever.
Meek is
5-0 for the first time since 1986. Corner is 5-0 for the first time since the
1981 football season.
* Gulf Shores (5-1) and Dothan High (5-1) are both off to the best starts in
any season ever.
* On the flip side of winning, Springville has started the 2022 season 0-5
and that is their worst start since 1961. Huffman is 0-6 for their worst start
to a season since 1968
* Did you notice? In the highest scoring game of
the week Central Florence outscored Westminster Christian 70-69. The 139 points
tied for the second most ever in a regular season football game in Alabama with
a 2003 game where Parrish defeated Hubbertville 81-58. The all-time highest
scoring game was in 2016 when Childersburg beat Central Coosa 82-64. No less than
eight teams topped the 60 point mark on offense.
* Alabama teams are a combined 25-30 vs. out-of-state competition. They were
8-14 against
Georgia, 9-8 vs. Florida, 5-3 vs. Tennessee and 3-5 against Mississippi.
* Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing
254 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.
* The Clay-Chalkville Cougars lost to 7A Thompson
in a great game Friday night to end their state leading winning streak. Now
three teams are tied for the lead with seven consecutive wins. Deshler,
Beauregard and Moody have the longest winning streaks.
* Columbia holds onto the longest losing streak at 67 straight contests.
The Eagles lost to Tanner 66-0. Columbia could surpass the state's longest losing streak in history held
by R.C. Hatch at 68 losses in a row. The Eagles have allowed at least 38 points
in 40 consecutive games dating back to the 2018 football season. They play at
home this week and will host Decatur.
* American Christian lead for most consecutive region victories
with 31 straight wins. The Patriots lost to Northridge 42-28 in a non-region game
Friday
night.
Mars Hill (29) is next up.
* Barbour County has lost 55
straight region contests after losing to Daleville 53-0 in a non-region contest.
* Catholic Montgomery now leads the
state with a streak of 19 consecutive
regular season victories. The Knights beat Pike Liberal Arts 56-0.
* Clay-Chalkville has won a state
leading 17 straight games at home. They fell to Thompson but that game was on
the road so their streak is still intact.
* Guntersville holds onto the longest road
winning streak having won 15 consecutive road games. The Wildcats defeated
Buckhorn 52-21 on the road this week.
*
Fyffe extended their streak of
consecutive games scoring to 296 games
after beating Plainview 56-13. T.R. Miller sits atop this list with a string of 354
games.
* The Elba Tigers picked up a milestone victory as
the Tigers won game number 600. Elba knocked off Providence Christian 40-7 for
their sixth straight win this season. Since first playing football back in 1922
the Tigers are 600-369-27.
