Quarterfinals of the AHSAA Playoffs Tidbits & Records

The Quarterfinals are complete. Less than two weeks from the 2023 Super Seven Championships. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *   Be sure to catch the latest edition of the AHSFHS podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode with a different lineup. Chris, Kody and TP will join Kurt to discuss the matchups this week. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Tuesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 10-2 predicting the games.

   *   All the official playoff brackets are posted as we get closer to crowning the 2023 football state champions. One win away for the teams in 1A-6A. The 7A Super Seven teams are set with Central Phenix City and Thompson squaring off on December 6th in Tuscaloosa while all other classification move on the semifinals. We will have much more for the Super Seven next week.

   *   Monday we will unveil the latest AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our predictions each playoff game. Scoring averages are posted now. Also look for the AHSFHS Playoff Game Previews were we give you stats and numbers for each game.

   *   Seven previously undefeated teams fell in the quarterfinals. Mary Montgomery, Hillcrest, Muscle Shoals, Jackson, West Morgan, Lauderdale County and Locust Fork all saw their unbeaten streaks come to a halt this week. The remaining undefeated teams:
       7A - Central Phenix City (12-0)
       6A - Clay-Chalkville (12-0),  Saraland (13-0)
       5A - Gulf Shores (13-0)
       4A - Catholic Montgomery (13-0)
       3A - Madison Academy (13-0), Mobile Christian (13-0)
       2A - B.B. Comer (13-0), Reeltown (12-0)
       1A - Elba (13-0), Leroy (12-0)

   *  In 6A and 5A it's an all #1 seed bracket for the semifinals this year. In 1A we have a matchup of #3 seeds with Pickens County taking on Coosa Christian. The games in 2A are both rematches of games during the regular season with Pisgah taking on Fyffe and Reeltown going to B.B. Comer. B.T. Washington is a #3 seed in 4A and Geraldine is a #2 seed in 3A. So 18 of the 24 top seeded teams advance to the semifinals next week.

   *   Upsets in the quarterfinals of the playoffs? None bigger this year than the Golden Eagles coming away with a 20-17 victory over Jackson. According to the AHSFHS Power Ratings Jackson was considered a 15 point favorite at kickoff. We have talked about the road B.T. Washington had to travel just to get to Tuscaloosa but I seriously doubt anyone had them making it there. They defeated American Christian 22-12, Handley 22-9 and now the Aggies of Jackson. Up next are the Knights of Catholic in the semifinals. Can they do the impossible?

   *  More Upsets? Pickens County the perennial 1A playoff team it seems took care of Wadley after being a pregame 13 point underdog. Lastly Guntersville knocked off Pleasant Grove 31-21 after entering the game as a 9 point underdog.

   *    Comeback wins? Ken Cherry scored with 19 seconds remaining in the game on a 4-yard run as Madison Academy came from behind to defeat Sylvania 35-28. Thompson overcame a 10 point deficit in the first half to move on to the Super Seven Championships by beating Hewitt-Trussville 21-10.

   *   Close Games? Pike Road kicked a 25 yard field goal with no time on the clock to squeak by Benjamin Russell 31-28. Cherokee County got by West Morgan 28-27 behind the running of Jacob Cornejo.

   *   Statement wins? Fyffe dominated a previously undefeated Locust Fork team 63-33 behind Logan Anderson's 362 yards and seven touchdowns. It's the ninth time in the past eleven seasons the Red Devils have reached the semifinals. Coosa Christian was too much for Hackleburg as they rolled to a 63-13 victory and a return trip to the semifinals.

   *   Records? Alvin Henderson continues to lead Elba on a mission. He ran for 314 yards and scored 6 TDs as Elba steamrolled Maplesville 49-14. Henderson now sits alone at the top of the list for most touchdowns scored in a season with 58. The last time Maplesville gave up more than 49 points was in 2003.

   *  B.T. Washington, Gulf Shores and Westminster Christian won a quarterfinal playoff game for the first time in their school's history. It will be their first trip to the semifinals.

   *   Teams who have not reached the semifinals in a while include; Parker (1989), Geraldine (2000), Eufaula (2006), Guntersville (2006) and Elba (2015).

   *  Teams who have never won a semifinal game include: B.T. Washington, Coosa Christian, Geraldine, Gulf Shores and Westminster Christian.

   *   The best semifinal matchups I would most like to see; Parker (12-1) at Clay-Chalkville (13-0), Reeltown (12-0) at B.B. Comer (13-0), Pisgah (12-1) at Fyffe (12-1) and Elba (13-0) at Leroy (12-0).

   *   Teams who have never hosted a semifinal game but will this week include; Saraland, Gulf Shores and Westminster Christian.

   *   Best home team records in the semifinals of the playoffs for teams hosting games next week. Fyffe 6-2, B.B. Comer 2-0 and Ramsay 2-1.

   *   Teams you do not wish to face in the semifinals along with their all-time record in the semifinals. Cherokee County 5-1, Madison Academy 5-2 and Fyffe 8-2.

   *   If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow. We will cover all the playoff matchups for each classification.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for 164 consecutive weeks since the final poll in 2009.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last nineteen games following a 31-21 win over Hillcrest Tuscaloosa in the third round of the playoffs.

   *   Saraland has won 24 consecutive home games and will be back at home next week in the third round against Pike Road.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 23 consecutive road games following a 44-20 win over Jacksonville this week.

   *   Fyffe continues to dominate Class 2A as they have for the last ten seasons. The Red Devils are currently sitting on a string of 319 games without being shutout.
