Week Five Tidbits & Records

We are almost halfway through the regular season. The chase for a region championship is on. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *  Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 10-2.

   *  Monday we will unveil the AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our Top Ten in each classification. Scoring averages are posted now.

   *  We begin each week with the offenses and high scoring games and this week is no different. Thirteen teams put up 60 or more points on their opponents led by Lexington's 77-6 victory over Tharptown. Meek knocked off Phillips 72-16 and Deshler overpowered Wilson 70-8. Saraland and Dothan also set team records for scoring.

   *  Huffman was shutout by Shades Valley 44-0 and have been outscored 259-0 this season. The last team to not score a point in a season was Notasulga in 1965 when they were outscored 329-0 in nine games.

   *  Some games of interest include Hoover falling to 1-4 for the first time since 1994 after losing to Hewitt-Trussville 28-7.

   *  Gulf Shores and St. Luke's are off to the best start in their school's history at 5-0. Pleasant Valley and Shoals Christian are both 4-0 and that too are the best starts for those teams. Congratulations to these schools.

   *  Sulligent defeated Aliceville 49-30 to move to 5-0 for the first time since 1966. Baker is off to their best start at 5-0 since 1973 when they were in Class 2A.

   *  What about John Carroll? They have started the season 5-0 for the first time since 1999. The Cavaliers will face a tougher schedule down the stretch with Pleasant Grove and Ramsay upcoming.

   *  Off to bad starts? Alexandria has never began a season 0-5 until this year. Gardendale is 0-4 for the first time since 1995 and Jasper is 0-4 for the first time since 1994.

   *  Statement wins for some teams always catch our attention. Vigor took care of UMS-Wright 31-9. South Lamar upset Pickens County 21-20. Hartselle beat Gadsden City 31-28. Central Clay County handled Handley 31-6. B.B. Comer defeated Vincent 36-0 on Thursday night.

   *  The biggest upset of the week had to be Davidson beating Fairhope 42-10 after entering the game as a 21 point underdog. Homewood shocked Benjamin Russell 41-21 after being a 15 point underdog. Lastly, Paul Bryant was also a 15 point underdog but took care of Northridge 27-21.

   *  If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow.

   *  Hoover had been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 263 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs lost to Hewitt-Trussville 28-7 and was dropped from the polls this week. Fyffe will assume the lead as the Red Devils have been ranked 158 consecutive weeks since the final poll in 2009.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last eleven games. The Spartans were favored by a record 60 points against Robertsdale and won 66-0.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 76 straight contests. The Eagles lost to Sardis 42-8. They hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.

   *   Mars Hill with a string of 34 straight region victories tops this list following a 76-0 thrashing of Elkmont. Catholic Montgomery (30) is close behind the patriots.

   *   Barbour County has lost 61 consecutive region games after falling to Reeltown 47-8 this week.

   *   The #3 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 28 straight regular season games. They beat Geneva 49-0 this week for their third shutout of the season.

   *   Saraland has won 19 consecutive home games following their road win over Robertsdale. This week the Spartans host Foley.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 19 consecutive road games after knocking off Geneva on the road. They also play the next three games on the road starting with Demopolis this week.

   *   Fyffe is back to being Fyffe as they dominated Section 63-0 for their third straight shutout victory. They are currently sitting on a string of 310 games without being shutout.

   *   Some head coaches will be reaching milestone wins in 2023. Clint Smith at Jacksonville picked up the 150th win in his coaching career. His record over 22 seasons stands at 150-87. Congratulation Coach!

   *   Adam Fossett at B.B. Comer can reach the 100 win milestone this week as The Tigers host Saks on Friday night.

   *   Undefeated Randolph County can win the 500th game in the school's history with a victory over Wadley this coming week.
