We are halfway through the regular season. The chase for a region
championship is in full swing. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.
* Be sure to catch our podcast
this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode. Also follow the Barber
Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions.
Last week the guys went 9-3. Another great week for them.
* Monday we will unveil the AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our Top
Ten in each classification. Scoring averages are posted now.
* Coosa Christian forfeited their four wins this season according to the
AHSAA. They also saw their game cancelled Friday night against Heritage Academy
MS. They are still in the running for one of the last two playoff in region 7.
* What a week of football. Many games were across classifications which
always makes for interesting matchups. We saw upsets, blowouts, offense and some
defensive games.
* We
begin each week with the offenses and high scoring games and we had a few this
week. Ten teams put up 60 or more points on their opponents led by
Westminster Christian's 71-54 victory over Central Florence. Cherokee knocked off
Tharptown 70-28 and
Saraland completely dominated Foley 70-20. The Spartans set a record last week
for most points scored in a game against Robertsdale that lasted seven days.
* Do you appreciate defense? How about these games?
Homewood held off Pinson Valley 10-7, Auburn got by Ramsay 13-7 and Park
Crossing handled Selma 6-0.
* Big Games? None bigger than Clay-Chalkville
surprising Thompson 36-33 in an exciting game on ESPN2 Thursday night. Mars Hill
scored late to defeat Russellville 27-24.
* Huffman was shutout by Hewitt-Trussville
62-0 and have been outscored
321-0 this
season. The last team to not score a point in a season was Notasulga in 1965
when they were outscored 329-0 in nine games. The Vikings host Pinson Valley
this week.
* Some games of interest include
Hoover falling to 1-5 for the first time since 1994 after losing to
Mt. Brook 34-24. The Bucs still control their own destiny as far as the
playoff picture is concerned. They must win their next three games.
* Gulf Shores
(6-0) is off to the best start in their school's
history as the Dolphins thumped Murphy 37-14 Thursday night. B.B. Comer (6-0) is
off to their best start since 1996. Locust Fork (6-0) is also enjoying their
best start since 1998. Sulligent is 6-0 for the first time since the 1966
football season. Congratulations to these schools.
* Demopolis was shutout by Catholic for the first
time since the 2017 football season when Auburn turned the trick by a score of
20-0 some 70 games ago.
* What about John Carroll? They have started the season
5-0 for the first time since 1999. The Cavaliers will face a tougher schedule
down the stretch with Pleasant Grove and Ramsay upcoming.
* Childersburg beat #10 Vincent 16-14 to secure the first victory over a
ranked team since 1991. The Tigers had lost their last 44 games to a ranked team
before Friday night's victory. Wow!
* Off to bad starts?
Murphy is 0-6 for the first time since 1962. Alexandria and D.A.R. have never began a season 0-6 until this
year. Gardendale is 0-5 for the first time since 1995 and Jasper is 0-5 for the
first time since 1994.
* Aliceville is 1-5 for the first time since 1989, Piedmont is 1-4 for the
first time since 2004.
* Brantley fell to Highland Home 46-0. It is the worst loss for the Bulldogs
since 1969.
* The biggest upset of the week had to be Pisgah
beating Sylvania 40-34 after entering the game as a 14 point underdog. Percy
Julian
shocked Carver Montgomery 26-14 after being a 15 point underdog. Lastly,
Hanceville was also a 14 point underdog but took care of Lawrence County 32-17.
* Other games where the winner may have been a
surprise to some fans included Theodore defeating Opelika 16-10 and Pleasant
Grove beating Parker 22-21.
* Statement wins? Dothan took control in the second half to defeat Baker
35-14. Hartselle came back to get by Oxford 22-21. Hillcrest Tuscaloosa
dominated Gadsden City 32-3. Andalusia defeated Bibb County 27-10.

* Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for 158 consecutive weeks since the final poll
in 2009.
*
The longest winning
streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last twelve games. The Spartans
are going to be difficult for any team in the state to defeat the next couple of
years.
* Columbia now
holds onto the longest losing streak at 77 straight contests. The Eagles lost to
Tanner 21-3. They hold the
all-time record for consecutive losses.
* Mars Hill with a string of 34 straight region victories
tops this list and they will back in region play this week against Colbert
County. Catholic Montgomery (30)
is close behind the Panthers.
* Barbour County has lost 61 consecutive region games and will
try to break that streak this week against Goshen.
* The #3 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 29 straight regular season games.
They beat Demopolis 42-0 this week for their fourth shutout of the season.
* Saraland has won 20 consecutive home games
following their home win over Foley. This week the Spartans travel to Prichard
to face the Blount Leopards.
* Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak
having won 20 consecutive road games after knocking off Demopolis on the road.
They also play the next two games on the road starting with Montgomery Academy this
week.
* The early season loss to Geraldine has not
slowed down Fyffe as they dominated Plainview 49-14. They are currently sitting on a string of
311 games without being shutout. The Red Devils have defeated Plainview nineteen
consecutive times on the football field.
* Adam Fossett
got the 100th win of his coaching career as B.B. Comer routed Saks 42-6 this
week. His overall record is 100-76 in 16 seasons at Winterboro, Childersburg and
B.B. Comer. He will be adding to that win total as his team is among the best in
2A this season.
* Anniston can claim the 600th win in program history this week
as the Bulldogs hit the road for a big matchup with Handley.
* Undefeated Randolph County
joined the 500 win club this week as the Tigers defeated Wadley 49-6 to move to
5-0 on the season. Congratulations to the Tigers.
