Week Eight Tidbits & Records

Teams are laying claim to region titles and preparing for the playoffs as the regular season nears a close. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 11-1 for the second week in a row.

   *   Monday we will unveil the AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our Top Ten in each classification. Scoring averages are posted now.

   *   In case you missed it, Saturday morning Central Phenix City defeated Percy Julian 35-6.

   *   Another week of upsets, blowouts and a few great finishes to games.

   *   We begin each week with the offenses and high scoring games and we had a few this week. Sixteen teams put up 60 or more points on their opponents led by Coosa Christian who had no mercy on Cedar Bluff by a score of 94-7. Randolph defeated D.A.R. 75-13 and Clay-Chalkville shutout Huffman 72-0.

   *   Upsets? North Jackson beat Priceville 40-8 after entering the game as a 19 point underdog. Sparkman fell to Bob Jones but was considered a 15 point favorite. Beulah defeated Childersburg after being a 10 point underdog prior to the game.

   *   Big region games? Mary Montgomery defeated Baker 35-14 to take command of 7A region one. Austin beat James Clemens 28-7 to stay in the hunt for a region four championship. Sulligent throttled Lamar County 48-6.

   *   Close Games? Parker scored on a 1-yard run by QB Offord with 34 seconds remaining in the game to defeat Mt. Brook 13-10. Florence beat Huntsville 23-20.

   *   Statement wins? St. James ran over undefeated Trinity 47-8 to capture a region crown in 3A. Hewitt-Trussville outscored Vestavia Hills 55-27.

   *   Huffman was shutout by Clay-Chalkville 72-0 and have been outscored 454-0 this season. The last team to not score a point in a season was Notasulga in 1965 when they were outscored 329-0 in nine games. The Vikings travel to Pell City this week.

   *   Gulf Shores (8-0) is off to the best start in their school's history as the Dolphins thumped Elberta 55-7. Corner is 7-0 for the first time in school history after beating Oak Grove 42-13. Locust Fork joins this group with a 8-0 record for the first time following a 49-0 win over Southeastern.

   *   B.B. Comer (8-0) is off to their best start since 1995. Sulligent is 8-0 for the first time since the 1966 football season. Mary Montgomery is 8-0 for the first time since 1965. Pisgah and West Morgan are both 7-0 for their best start since 2003 and 2002 respectively. Congratulations to these schools.

   *   Off to bad starts? D.A.R. and Macon-East have never began a season 0-8 until this year.

   *   If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for 160 consecutive weeks since the final poll in 2009.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last fourteen games following a 56-7 win over Baldwin County. The Spartans are going to be difficult for any team in the state to defeat the next couple of years.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 79 straight contests. The Eagles lost to Cullman 49-0. They hold the all-time record for consecutive losses.

   *   Mars Hill with a string of 36 straight region victories tops this list as they defeated Phil Campbell 62-6. Catholic Montgomery (32) is close behind the Panthers.

   *   Barbour County has lost 64 consecutive region games after falling to Highland Home by a score of 39-0.

   *   The #3 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 31 straight regular season games. They beat Bullock County 38-0 this week for their sixth shutout of the season and fifth in a row.

   *   Saraland has won 20 consecutive home games following their home win over Baldwin County. This week the Spartans have an open date.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 22 consecutive road games after knocking off Bullock County on the road. Their last five games have been on the road and they won them all by a combined score of 219-0.

   *   Fyffe continues to dominate in 2A as they defeated Sand Rock 47-0 this week. The Red Devils have scored at least 47 points in every game since that first game loss. They are currently sitting on a string of 313 games without being shutout.

   *   Westminster Christian is averaging an impressive 51.4 points a game and allowing 30.9. That means over the course of this season their games are averaging 82.3 points on the scoreboard. So if you appreciate offense go watch a Wildcat game.

   *   Anniston can claim the 600th win in program history this week as the Bulldogs play host to Talladega.

   *   Deshler can join the 600 win club this week after picking up win #599 against Central Florence 57-47.

   *   Pat Prestridge tied Ron Watters for the most wins at Randolph County with 147. His overall record in 22 seasons at Randolph County and Oakman is 164-87. The Tigers take on Beulah this week on the road.

   *   Drew Gilmer can tie Coach Jerry Wood as the winningest coach at Clay-Chalkville this coming week with one more victory. Coach Gilmer has 74 wins at Clay-Chalkville.

   *   Mark Hudspeth can accomplish the same feat at Gulf Shore as he is one win behind Duane Davis, the first coach for the Dolphins. The Dolphins take a week off before hosting Vigor for the region championship next week.

   *   Dustan Goode has 78 wins at Mortimer Jordan which leaves him one win behind Greg Watts for the most victories at the school. The Blue Devils travel to Mountain Brook this week.

   *   Hugh Fountain, the head football coach at W.S. Neal, accomplished something no other coach currently has done. He became the winningest coach at three different schools. His Eagles defeated Flomaton 44-21 as he surpassed Coach David Salter with 62 wins. He is also the winningest coach at Charles Henderson (106 wins) and Escambia Academy (94 wins). His overall record stands at 266-139 in 36 seasons as a head football coach.
