Week Nine Tidbits & Records

Many teams have already clinched playoff spots as the regular season winds down in 2023. Here are a few tidbits from this week's football action.

   *   Be sure to catch our podcast this Sunday night as we will be posting a new episode. We will go over all the playoff scenarios for each and every region in the AHSAA. Also follow the Barber Shop Gurus on Wednesday morning for their latest game analysis and predictions. Last week the guys went 8-4 this past week.

   *   Monday we will unveil the AHSFHS Power Ratings for every team along with our Top Ten in each classification. Scoring averages are posted now.

   *   Another week of upsets, blowouts and a few great finishes to games.

   *   We begin each week with the offenses and high scoring games and we had a few this week. Thirteen teams put up 60 or more points on their opponents led by Madison Academy who blasted Brindlee Mountain 74-0.

   *   Upsets? Spain Park surprised Hewitt-Trussville 50-29 after entering the game as a solid 20 point underdog. Huntsville defeated Sparkman 35-28 in 2 overtimes after falling behind 21-3 early. Arab beat Guntersville to claim the region title 29-19 after being a 15 point underdog prior to the game.

   *   Big region games? Central Phenix City beat Auburn 41-20 to win region 2. Clay-Chalkville defeated Oxford 28-14 to also claim a region championship. Lauderdale County shocked 3A powerhouse Mars Hill 20-14.

   *    Fyffe outscored Pisgah 56-42 behind the running of Logan Anderson who amassed 347 yards on 25 carries and 5TDs. The win gives Coach Benefield 299 wins as the head coach at Fyffe.

   *   Close Games? Hartselle got by Decatur 2019 by scoring a touchdown with just 9 seconds remaining. Valley beat Elmore County 41-40 on a Hail Mary pass with 12 seconds left on the game clock. Leeds blocked a field goal with 20 seconds remaining to hold off Moody 24-21.

   *   Statement wins? Austin beat Bob Jones 49-22. Jackson doubled up St. Michael 42-21. Thomasville outscored W.S. Neal 34-28. Tuscaloosa Academy defeated Sulligent 21-14 and Elba Throttled Florala 56-28.

   *   Huffman was shutout by Pell City 68-0 and have been outscored 522-0 this season. The last team to not score a point in a season was Notasulga in 1965 when they were outscored 329-0 in nine games. The Vikings travel to Parker this week, a team with one of the best defenses in any classification.

   *   Gulf Shores (8-0) is off to the best start in their school's history as the Dolphins took the week off. Corner is 8-0 for the first time in school history after beating Curry 64-7. Locust Fork joins this group with a 9-0 record for the first time following a 62-0 win over Gaston.

   *   B.B. Comer (9-0) is off to their best start since 1995. Mary Montgomery is 9-0 for the first time since 1965. Mobile Christian is 9-0 for the first time since 1995 when they were a member of the AISA. West Morgan is 8-0 for their best start since 2002. Congratulations to these schools.

   *   Off to bad starts? D.A.R. has never began a season 0-9 until this year. Alexandria was last 0-9 in 1943. Huffman last started a season 0-9 in 1968 the first year they fielded a football team. Calera last started a season 0-8 in 1993.

   *   If we missed anything I will try to include it in our podcast tomorrow.

   *   Fyffe has been ranked by the ASWA for 161 consecutive weeks since the final poll in 2009.

   *   The longest winning streak belongs to Saraland who has won their last fourteen games following an open date this week.

   *   Columbia now holds onto the longest losing streak at 80 straight contests. The Eagles lost to Athens 49-14. They hold the all-time record for consecutive losses and the streak is safe until the 2024 football season as they have completed region play this year.

   *   Mars Hill saw their string of 36 straight region victories come to an end against Lauderdale County. Catholic Montgomery will top this list for now with a 33 game region winning streak. That could be in jeopardy this week as they host Andalusia.

   *   Barbour County has lost 65 consecutive region games after falling to Horseshoe Bend by a score of 44-14.

   *   The #3 ranked Catholic Montgomery Knights have won 33 straight regular season games. They beat Dale County 63-0 this week for their seventh shutout of the season and sixth in a row.

   *   Saraland has won 20 consecutive home games and will host Theodore, the last team to defeat them in 2022, this week.

   *   Catholic Montgomery also holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 22 consecutive road games.

   *   Fyffe is still Fyffe and rules in 2A until further notice as they defeated Pisgah 56-42 this week. The Red Devils have scored at least 47 points in every game since that first game loss. They are currently sitting on a string of 314 games without being shutout.

   *   Gordo, with an 8-1 record, has assured itself of the 31st consecutive winning season. The last time the Green Wave failed to win more games than they lost was in 1992 when they finished 4-6. The record belongs to Oneonta who had a run of 37 straight winning seasons between 1958-1994.

   *   Luverne has wrapped up their 41st consecutive playoff spot which is the record in Alabama. The last time the Tigers did not qualify for the playoffs was back in 1982.

   *   Anniston claimed the 600th win in program history this week as the Bulldogs defeated Talladega 54-0. The Bulldogs are 600-403 all-time playing football.

   *   Deshler joined the 700 win club this week after picking up a hard fought win over Rogers by a score of 28-19.

   *   Drew Gilmer tied Coach Jerry Wood as the winningest coach at Clay-Chalkville this week with the victory over Oxford. Coach Gilmer has 75 wins at Clay-Chalkville in just seven seasons leading the Cougars.

   *   Mark Hudspeth can accomplish the same feat at Gulf Shore as he is one win behind Duane Davis, the first coach for the Dolphins. The Dolphins will host Vigor this week.

   *   Dustan Goode has 78 wins at Mortimer Jordan which leaves him one win behind Greg Watts for the most victories at the school. The Blue Devils will host winless Jackson-Olin this week.
