Week 6 Games
   Last Week:  3-1
   Season Total:  18-5

 (#3)  Oxford (13-1) at
 (#10)  Hartselle (9-3)
at J.P. Cain Stadium
Oxford   Hartselle
13-1 (6-0)  Record 9-3 (5-1)
6A-R6  Class/Region 6A-R7
#3  ASWA Ranking #10
83.1  Power Rating 80.2
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Oxford as a 1 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Oxford Yellow Jackets defeated Hartselle by a score of 34-14 in the second round of the playoffs at Home  on Fri., Nov. 15 during the 2024 football season.

Series:   Hartselle and Oxford have met 5 times on the field.... Oxford holds a 3-2 edge in the games played.

Comments:    A matchup of two ranked 6A teams. Hartselle has righted the ship after the early loss to Austin while Oxford is mowing down opponents with little resistance thus far. While this game carries no region weight, it has a lot of cache for the outlook in 6A north.

Oxford has used a pretty balanced attack this year with Mims at QB and Wilson at RB, but where they excel is on the defensive side of the ball. Last week they held Pinson Valley to under 230 yards of offense and forced them to go 3-14 on third downs. They are giving up just under 10 points per game.

Hartselle pulled off a huge out of region win last week with a 3 point victory over a really good Gadsden City team. Unfortunately for Hartselle QB Landon Blackwell went down in the first half and wasn't able to return. Not sure of his status, but they relied heavily on the run game after that. Fortunately Hartselle has Fletcher and Bryant and they can shoulder the burden.

At the end of the day, I think this game doesn't stack up well for Hartselle. Assuming Blackwell is still out, and having to rely heavily on the run game against one of the better defenses in 6A north is not a recipe for success. But you never count Hartselle out.

Prediction:  Oxford 23 Hartselle 13

 Plainview (5-5) at
 (#5)  Fyffe (9-3)
at Paul Benefield Stadium
Plainview   Fyffe
5-5 (5-3)  Record 9-3 (7-0)
4A-R8  Class/Region 3A-R8
NR  ASWA Ranking #5
40.8  Power Rating 58.3
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Fyffe as a 20 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Fyffe Red Devils defeated Plainview by a score of 49-14 in week 6 on the road  on Fri., Sep. 29 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Fyffe and Plainview have met 63 times on the field.... Fyffe holds a 39-23 edge in the games played.

Comments:    An out of region game that pits some good old sand mountain/Rainsville area rivals against one another. We all know about the dominance of Fyffe in 2A but while Plainview has struggled some as of late, they have been a very successful program over the years.

Plainview comes in 2-2 (1-2) in the brutal 3A R6, having been smoked by Geraldine and just bested by Piedmont. Some people are discounting Piedmont with the coach moving on and them standing at 1-3, but they have lost in competitive games to 3 good teams. Plainview playing tough with them is a good sign for the Rainsville community. I don't think the Bears will make the playoffs but that is just because this region is so stacked.

Plainview is going to run a lot at you. They will pass, but only sparingly. They run a lot of misdirection and option. They have a committee of backs with Lopez, Brown, Hodges and don't overlook QB Rutledge, he will take it to the house.

We all know what Fyffe and Paul Benefield are going to do. But can you stop it? Fyffe lost opening week to a very good 3A Geraldine team and I am reminded of the famous Mark Twain quote 'the report of my death was an exaggeration.' Fyffe has since went to record three shoutouts in blowouts. Fyffe had 14 different kids carry the ball against Section. Pick your poison. It would take me too long to list all of Fyffe's weapons. Can't wait for the Fyffe/Pisgah matchup.

Prediction:  Fyffe 28 Plainview 12

 Sulligent (9-5) at
 South Lamar (2-8)
at J.C. McAdams Field
Sulligent   South Lamar
9-5 (4-2)  Record 2-8 (2-5)
2A-R5  Class/Region 1A-R5
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
47.3  Power Rating 40.8
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Sulligent as a 5 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Sulligent Blue Devils defeated South Lamar by a score of 42-14 in week 11 at Home  on Fri., Nov. 1 during the 2024 football season.

Series:   South Lamar and Sulligent have met 41 times on the field.... Sulligent holds a 22-19 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Sulligent comes in 5-0 and looking to compete with Lamar County and Tuscaloosa Academy for a home playoff spot in 2A R5. South Lamar shocked a lot of people (myself included) by knocking off Pickens County last week 21-20. South Lamar does have one loss 27-12 to Lamar County, but as Lamar County keep racking up wins, that loss looks more and more impressive.

Sulligent has an impressive offense that runs through RB AJ Lowe. He is quite the Lowe'd. See what I did there? He will have to be the focus of South Lamar's defense. but at the same time QB Clark can throw the ball and at 6'3 doesn't have trouble seeing over the defense.

South Lamar, as I have stated before, is a team that is really hard to find anything on. I really wish there were more people dedicated to updating Hudl's, or posting on message boards in the absence of newspaper reporting. It is really a disservice to the kids that all the public ever gets is just a score. All that being said, South Lamar pulled a big upset by knocking off Pickens County 21-20 this week and sets up a three way battle between them PCHS and Lynn for region supremacy. I like South Lamar to win the region, but this ain't a region game.

Prediction:  Sulligent 34 South Lamar 29

 (#8)  Muscle Shoals (9-3) at
 James Clemens (6-5)
at Madison City Schools Stadium
Muscle Shoals   James Clemens
9-3 (5-1)  Record 6-5 (5-2)
6A-R7  Class/Region 7A-R4
#8  ASWA Ranking NR
86.5  Power Rating 76.9
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Muscle Shoals as a 8 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Muscle Shoals Trojans defeated James Clemens by a score of 42-28 in week 6 on the road  on Fri., Sep. 29 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   James Clemens and Muscle Shoals have met 2 times on the field.... Muscle Shoals holds a 2-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Muscle Shoals comes in off a bye, which is nice seeing how this will be their toughest opponent to date. The teams have had two common opponents with both dispatching Bob Jones rather easily and both having a gritty defensive battle with Florence.

Muscle Shoals has only given up 48 points through 4 games, and 28 of that was to Athens. From the film I have seen, this Muscle Shoals defense is just not good, they are one of the hardest hitting defenses I have seen in north Alabama. Muscle Shoals has no shortage of weapons on offense with Hampton, Greene, Goodloe and Fowler just to name a few.

James Clemens comes in one loss, an out of region game to perennial 6A power Mountain Brook 18-13. The Jets seem to rely heavily on the dual running threat of DJ Williams and Cam Berry. Berry finished with 66 yards on 19 carries with a TD against a very stingy Florence defense.

Prediction:  Muscle Shoals 35 James Clemens 24

 (#2)  Pisgah (11-2) at
 Sylvania (9-3)
at Ram Stadium
Pisgah   Sylvania
11-2 (6-0)  Record 9-3 (6-1)
2A-R7  Class/Region 3A-R8
#2  ASWA Ranking NR
50.4  Power Rating 62.0
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Sylvania as a 14 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Sylvania Rams defeated Pisgah by a score of 24-22 in week 11 at Home  on Fri., Nov. 1 during the 2024 football season.

Series:   Sylvania and Pisgah have met 51 times on the field.... Sylvania holds a 29-22 edge in the games played.

Comments:    This battle of unbeaten teams is probably the biggest game among smaller schools this week. Both are state title contenders in their respective classes, and the argument could be made this is the toughest remaining game on either's schedule.

Sylvania's offense starts and finishes with Aiden Parham. He had a ridiculous 48 carries for 326 yards with two scores a few weeks ago against Piedmont. They get the ball to him a variety of ways, but utilize direct snaps to him out of the Single Wing or Notre Dame Box. They know their opponents know they're going to run the ball on almost every play, but they don't care. They just continue to run it right at you anyway, and no one so far has been able to slow them down.

Pisgah is a hard team to find a ton of information on, but what I've from their 2022 film is a team that appears to do everything well. Similarly to Sylvania, they don't appear to have many players that jump off the page at you athletically, but they clearly know their identity as a team. Each week I find myself more impressed with them than the week before.

A region title game with Fyffe looms in a few weeks for Pisgah. This will be a chance for them to see how they stack up a few weeks early, as Sylvania just blew out Geraldine, who beat Fyffe earlier in the season.

Prediction:  Sylvania 34, Pisgah 20

 Jacksonville (6-5) at
 Ohatchee (6-5)
at Ragan Clark Stadium
Jacksonville   Ohatchee
6-5 (3-3)  Record 6-5 (4-4)
5A-R6  Class/Region 3A-R6
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
67.5  Power Rating 47.6
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Jacksonville as a 18 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Jacksonville Golden Eagles defeated Ohatchee by a score of 51-6 in week 6 on the road  on Fri., Sep. 29 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Ohatchee and Jacksonville have met 33 times on the field.... Jacksonville holds a 22-9 edge in the games played.

Comments:    The theme this week is non-region matchups between teams that will make noise in the playoffs, and this one is no different.

Ohatchee has been known for their rushing out of the flexbone and double wing for many years now, but what is striking is their passing game this year. QB Jake Roberson threw for 250 yards against Piedmont last week, with 130 of that going to Colby Hester. But they also ran for nearly 200 yards as well. Defensively, Will Folsom scored on a pick six as the Indians held Piedmont to just 200 total yards.

Jacksonville's hopes this season rest on the arm of Troy QB commit Jim Ogle. On top of having an incredible arm, he's a sneaky-good athlete. Some of his best plays this year have come when he's had to escape the pocket and take off down the field. Despite spending much of their game with Handley running for his life, he was able to make some plays happen with his legs, and had an increbile throw 30+ yards downfield for a score.

Both teams have solid defensive play at times, but it is largely inconsistent. Given that offense is the strength of both, I expect this one to be a shootout.

Prediction:  Jacksonville 44, Ohatchee 34

 Russellville (7-4) at
 (#4)  Mars Hill (14-1)
at Mars Hill Stadium
Russellville   Mars Hill
7-4 (5-1)  Record 14-1 (7-0)
5A-R7  Class/Region 3A-R7
NR  ASWA Ranking #4
73.9  Power Rating 74.6
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Mars Hill as a 3 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Mars Hill Panthers defeated Russellville by a score of 28-14 in week 2 on the road  on Fri., Aug. 30 during the 2024 football season.

Series:   Mars Hill and Russellville have met 3 times on the field.... Mars Hill holds a 3-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    This is another non-region battle of unbeaten teams, although this time we have a team, Mars Hill, jumping up two classes from 3A to play 5A Russellville.

Mars Hill is no stranger to playing teams from higher classifications. They've already beaten 6A Cullman and 4A Brooks this year. There's a lot going on with this run-based offense. Most plays will feature some sort of motion or shift to or from a variation of the T-bone or double wing. They'll even work in a reverse or double hand-off. So on top of having athletes everywhere, just finding the ball is a challenge in itself.

Russellville has some offensive fire power of their own. WR Cash Crumpton will get the ball a lot out in the flat, and he has the ability to take it to the house on any given play. QB Harrison Burch and RB Cameron Phinizee are also key players on that side of the ball. The most impressive part of their offense, however, is how they block downfield. They create a lot of big plays from throwing short passes behind the line of scrimmage and just clearing out the defense.

As great as their offense always has been, Mars Hill is susceptible to giving up points. Russellville will get theirs, but the question is can they get enough stops?

Prediction:  Mars Hill 40, Russellville 31

 (#1)  Catholic Montgomery (14-0) at
 Demopolis (7-4)
at Tiger Stadium
Catholic Montgomery   Demopolis
14-0 (6-0)  Record 7-4 (6-0)
5A-R2  Class/Region 5A-R3
#1  ASWA Ranking NR
79.5  Power Rating 67.6
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Catholic Montgomery as a 10 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Catholic Montgomery Knights defeated Demopolis by a score of 42-0 in week 6 on the road  on Fri., Sep. 29 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Demopolis and Catholic Montgomery have met one time on the field.... Catholic Montgomery holds a 1-0 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Regardless of how close this game turns out to be, this is a statement week for Catholic. Few programs have as storied a history as Demopolis, and Catholic is also jumping up a class from 4A to 5A with this matchup.

Demopolis runs mostly a split backs formation on offense. Their play designs are fairly unique, with a lot of misdirection and counters to throw the defense off balance. RB Keishawn Rowser is a bruising runner who also has breakaway speed in open field.

For Montgomery Catholic, they've just been rolling along as expected, their closest game so far a 21-0 win over 6A McGill-Toolen in their season-opener. Their offense, led by Caleb McCreary, may not be quite as prolific as last season, but they're still plenty explosive. Their defense looks to be even better. They've given up just 18 points through 5 games, less than half of what they had given up at this point last season.

It feels like there has been a lot less hype around Montgomery Catholic this year for whatever reason. Perhaps we've just gotten so accustomed to seeing them drop huge scores on opponents. Both of these teams struggle with finding many teams on their level to challenge them during the regular season, so this is a big test for both.

Prediction:  Catholic 42, Demopolis 14

8-4 (5-2)  Record 7-5 (5-1)
4A-R4  Class/Region 5A-R2
#9  ASWA Ranking NR
64.2  Power Rating 79.0
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Andalusia as a 17 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Andalusia Bulldogs defeated Bibb County by a score of 27-10 in week 6 on the road  on Fri., Sep. 29 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Andalusia and Bibb County have met 6 times on the field.... Andalusia holds a 4-2 edge in the games played.

Comments:    When you have two powerhouse programs like this meeting up, it is strange to not see it happen in November when the playoffs bring teams like this together. This has a third round game feel to it. Andalusia has been really good so far in the season, but so as Bibb County.

That is a very long drive for Bibb as they make the trip down to Andalusia. Bibb County was able to snap American Christians long region winning streak and has full control of the region and their destiny. Andalusia is being Andalusia, which is being very good.

I think Andalusia is just slightly better and is on a different level than Bibb County. Not by much, but I do think Andalusia is elite. Bibb County is a great team but they get stopped in their tracks this week.

Prediction:  Andalusia 35 Bibb County 27

 (#1)  Catholic Montgomery (14-0) at
 Demopolis (7-4)

Comments:    Another really good matchup happening in west Alabama. Demopolis is consistently one of the better programs in 5A. They always find a way to win a region title and win a few games in the playoffs.

Catholic is preparing for another long run toward a state title, and this game will help them in the long run. Demopolis will also use this to help them out in a stacked 5A South this year.

I think the first half will be closer than people think, but Catholic will pull away late.

Prediction:  Catholic 28 Demopolis 10

 (#5)  Mountain Brook (8-4) at
 (#2)  Hoover (10-3)
at Regions Park
Mountain Brook   Hoover
8-4 (4-2)  Record 10-3 (7-0)
6A-R6  Class/Region 7A-R3
#5  ASWA Ranking #2
83.4  Power Rating 74.4
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Mountain Brook as a 7 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Mountain Brook Spartans defeated Hoover by a score of 34-24 in week 6 on the road  on Fri., Sep. 29 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Hoover and Mountain Brook have met 44 times on the field.... Hoover holds a 36-8 edge in the games played.

Comments:    While this game does not mean anything region wise, it is a big deal to the area of Birmingham. Hoover needs this win for many reasons. This will help gain back some confidence and more. Getting a win over Mountain Brook would help get the Buc fans back into it.

While Mountain Brook would love to pour on another loss to Hoover. Hoover is coming off back to back bad losses. However I do not know if Mountain Brook has faced a team like Hoover since their opening loss to Vestavia Hills.

I think Hoover will bounce back and get back into the win column. This game will help Mountain Brook come time for the playoffs as not many teams are as talented as Hoover. Nevertheless, give me the Bucs to reenter the win column.

Prediction:  Hoover 35 Mountain Brook 20

 Gadsden City (6-4) at
 Hillcrest Tuscaloosa (6-4)

Gadsden City   Hillcrest Tuscaloosa
6-4 (4-2)  Record 6-4 (3-4)
6A-R8  Class/Region 7A-R3
NR  ASWA Ranking NR
76.0  Power Rating 88.1
AHSFHS Power Ratings have Hillcrest Tuscaloosa as a 14 point favorite.

Last Meeting:   The Hillcrest Tuscaloosa Patriots defeated Gadsden City by a score of 32-3 in week 6 on the road  on Fri., Sep. 29 during the 2023 football season.

Series:   Hillcrest Tuscaloosa and Gadsden City have met 3 times on the field.... Hillcrest Tuscaloosa holds a 2-1 edge in the games played.

Comments:    Two of the better teams in Class 6A. The Patriots are rolling currently, while Gadsden City is looking pretty good so far this season.

They are coming off a tough non-region contest against Hartselle. It is really hard to bounce back after a loss to face one of the best teams in the classification. Hillcrest Tuscaloosa has yet to allow double digit points so far this season.

I think that streak will come to an end, but not their winning streak.

I think the Patriots will win in a low scoring contest. The Patriots did not face Hartselle last week and I think that favors them.

Prediction:  Hillcrest Tuscaloosa 20 Gadsden City 10
