David Campbell grew up in Sumiton, Alabama and graduated from Dora High School where he was a star lineman on the football field.
Campbell was a two time All-SEC defensive tackle at Auburn in 1967-69. He was selected to the first team NEA All-American team in 1968. Also in that year, Campbell was twice an Associated Press Southeastern Lineman of the Week, Sports Illustrated Lineman of the Week and was named Most Valuable Lineman in Auburns 34-10 Sun Bowl victory over Arizona.
Campbell came to Walker High School in 1971 as an assistant coach and worked with Coach Larry Blakeney. He became the head football coach in 1975, leading the Vikings to the State Championship game in 1977 before the Vikings fell to Berry of Birmingham 21-0.
He remained at Walker for the next thirteen seasons. His Viking teams made the playoffs four times during his tenure and his record at Walker was 82-57.
In 1997 Coach Campbell accepted the head coaching position at nearby Sumiton Christian. His first team finished 9-1 and in 2000 they went 11-1, losing in the second round of the state playoffs. Campbells overall football record is 132-84 in 20 seasons as a head coach. He was named Class 6A Coach of the Year and served as the president of the Fifth District Board of the Alabama High Scholl Athletic Association. |
