Ronny Massey
Ronny Massey was born August 2, 1950 in Chatom, Alabama. He graduated from Washington County High School where he was a star performer on the football field. He played at Livingston University for Mickey Andrews on the 1971 National Championship Team and quarterbacked the 1972 team to the semifinals.
Massey began his football coaching career in Huntsville as an assistant for Larrie Robinson at Grissom High School in 1974. He stayed in Huntsville for two seasons before moving south to Thomasville.
In 1976 Massey accepted his first head coaching job at Class 2A Thomasville High School. Over the next four seasons his teams finished 30-14 with two playoff appearances.
After four successful years, the family moved to Citronelle, where Ronny coached for 17 years at Citronelle High School where he became the most successful coach in the schools history. His Wildcat teams qualified for the playoffs ten times during his tenure at Citronelle. His record with the Wildcats was 108-73-1.
He returned to Grissom, where he began his career as an assistant, from Citronelle in 1999. He remained with the program for ten seasons and a record of 51-56. Four of his teams made the playoffs with the 2000 team finishing 12-2 and reaching the third round of the state playoffs.
After he left Grissom in 2008, he assisted at Buckhorn the next season where his son played. His overall coaching record is 189-143-1 in 31 seasons as a head football coach at three different school.
The next year, Massey accepted the head coaching job at Richland High School in Tennessee until he was diagnosed with cancer in June of 2009.
Ronny Massey, 60, of Huntsville passed away at his home Tuesday, August 17, 2010.
