Best Defenses
AHSFHS.org Report (Sept. 20, 2010) The Best Defenses in Alabama With the Hoover Bucs running roughshod over their opponents fans are asking if they possibly have the best team ever at Hoover. It is still a little early to begin the comparisons with other Buccaneer teams much less teams from other schools. There have been teams that have dominated the opposition on defense that set the standard whereby Hoover may be compared later this year. These comparisons will be from the 1984-2009 era since the AHSAA went to the current six classification alignment. If we are to look at great defenses of the past the starting point must be the 1988 Vigor Wolves that won a National Championship along with the state title. The Wolves finished the season 13-0 while outscoring their opponents 387-44. In the playoffs they outscored the opposition 148-7 including a 41-7 win over Berry in the championship game. Another great defenses from 6A would include the Prattville team from 2003 that allowed only 50 points in a 12-1 season. The team that set numerous state records for defense would be the 1994 version of the Clay County Panthers. All they did was to outscore the opposition 408-22 and win the 2A state title along the way. The Panthers defense pitched ten shutouts including seven in a row at one point during the season. Amazingly they only allowed two touchdowns and three field goals all season. From 1994-1996 the Panthers won 44 of 45 games and outscored their opponents 1622-106. Any team would find it very difficult to match that record and scoring feat. The 1990 Courtland team won the 1A state championship with a perfect 13-0 record. They outscored the opposition 438-41 along the way. As great as these number appear it is not what makes this team great. The greatest accomplishment would be the fact they played and defeated six opponents from higher classifications during the regular season. The opponents for this 1A school included 5A Oxford (23-0), 5A Emma Sansom (20-3), 4A Cherokee County (35-7) and 4A Colbert County (14-0). They also beat 2A state champion Hazlewood 28-6 to start the season. The 2010 Hoover Bucs have run through the first four games by outscoring their opponents 168-0. Are they the best team ever? We shall see. It is too early for those comparisons at this point. Let's just see how the season plays out. The next test for the Bucs defense comes this Friday against the Gadsden City Titans.
