2012 Week 10

     Players Of the Week

By JOSH BEAN
For The ASWA

Brooks coach Jerry Hill told the TimesDaily that quarterback Skyler Beck's teammates "believe in him when he's out there," and it's easy to understand why after seeing Beck's performance last week against Colbert County.

Brooks threw for 456 yards and completed touchdown passes of 44, 28, 66, 6, 56 and 41 yards, and ran for a 1-yard TD in Brooks' 55-49 victory. The performance - accounting for eight touchdowns and leading the offense to 578 yards - made him this week's Alabama Sports Writers Association Offensive Player of the Week.

"Skyler has been that way all year for us," Hill said after the game. "He's like a coach on the field. He's got the eyes and mind of a coach."

Beck beat out two other finalists for the award, St. Luke's running back George Payne and Northside's Zarrian Grant.

Payne
rushed five times for 267 yards and four TDs (79, 31, 62 and 81 yards) in a 56-21 win over Cottage Hill Christian. Grant ran for 312 yards on 14 carries and had TD runs of 70, 69, 65, 47 and 56 yards in a 54-41 win over Oak Grove. Grant also had two interceptions.

Enterprise's Shaq Solomon
is the ASWA Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week. He intercepted four passes, returning two for touchdowns (40 and 13 yards), in the Wildcats' 58-19 romp over Jeff Davis.

The defensive/special teams finalists are Clements' Demarcus Johnson and Boaz kicker Leo Aragon.

Johnson returned two interceptions 20 and 70 yards for touchdowns, recovered a fumble and rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown as the Colts beat Pope John Paul II 28-7 for their first win. Aragon kicked a game-winning 20-yard FG as time expired to give Boaz a 38-35 victory over rival Sardis.

ASWA members from Birmingham, Brewton, Centre, Cullman, Decatur, Dothan, Florence, Fort Payne, Gadsden, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Oneonta, and Tuscaloosa submitted nominations this week.
