On Tuesday another former state championship team was eliminated from the 2013 playoffs. A day after Vigor announced the news they would forfeit games and not be included in the playoffs, Greenville self-imposed forfeits for three victories and were essentially eliminated from playoff action.

The action means that Demopolis will get the third seed in Class 5A region three while Selma will receive the four and final slot in Class 5A. The Tigers forfeited wins over Citronelle, Satsuma and Sumter Central, but the ineligible player did not play in the victory over Demopolis.

It is reported that the ineligible player should not have been allowed to participate due to academics. It will mark the first time the Tigers have not qualified for the playoffs since 2004.

The news release from the AHSAA:

Greenville High School has been fined, placed on probation for one year and ordered to forfeit three varsity football games for a violation of the AHSAA Academic Rule. The violation was self-reported by the school.

An academically-ineligible student was allowed to participate in the contests. Greenville must forfeit all contests its team won in which the student participated. Football forfeits include wins over Class 5A, Region 3 opponents Citronelle, Satsuma and Sumter Central. The student did not participate in the region win over Demopolis.

Greenville’s overall record is now 1-8 and its region record 1-6. The probationary period is a warning that other violations of this nature could bring further sanctions against the school.
