Regular Season Notes Winning a region championship is a goal of every team in their quest for a state title. Several schools have gone a while since winning their last region title. They include; Southside Gadsden (1980), Central Florence (1984), Munford (1992), New Hope (1992), Ranburne (1993), Falkville (1996), Center Point (1997), J.O. Johnson (1999) and Dale County (2001). Brantley claimed their state record 28th region championship. Trinity stretched their streak of consecutive winning seasons to thirty-two. If Colbert County can win their first round game they will tie Hazlewood for the most 10 win seasons in history with 24. T.R. Miller tied Hazlewood last week after they finished the regular season with a perfect 10-0 record. Along those lines.... if Sweet Water can win three games in the playoffs they will extend their string of 10 win seasons to a state leading eight. Teams with six consecutive 10 win seasons entering this season with a chance to also prolong their strings include Piedmont and Linden. One note is that Hoover's streak is at six including the 2013 season and would be 14 if not for the off the field forfeits of 2007. Russellville holds the record for consecutive 10 win seasons at eleven between 200-2010. Hazlewood with ten (1987-96) and Prattville with nine (2001-09) also had impressive streaks. Trinity has a streak of 32 consecutive winning seasons. Others with long streaks, along with their last losing season, include; Vestavia Hills (1991), Gordo (1992), Cullman (1994), Opelika (1995), Fyffe (1996), McAdory (1996) and Daphne (1996). Although they did not make this list, the T.R. Miller Tigers have suffered only three losing seasons in the past fifty years. Playoff Notes T.R. Miller, with 82 playoff wins, can tie Hazlewood for the most in Alabama high school football history if the Tigers can get three more victories this season. The Tigers are also tied with Hazlewood with thirty first round wins. The Colbert County Indians have made the most playoff appearances with 37. The Hoover Bucs have won 15 consecutive opening round playoff games. Others of note include Cedar Bluff (12), Mountain Brook (10) and Sweet Water (10). The record belongs to Hazlewood with a string of 20 consecutive first round wins from 1970-1996. There are no teams making the playoffs for the first time in their teams history. Teams back in the playoffs this year after droughts include; Russell County (2001), Brilliant (2001), Ardmore (2006), New Hope (2006), Falkville (2007), Florence (2007), Ranburne (2007) and Valley Head (2007). Luverne continues their streak of consecutive playoff appearances with a state best streak of thirty-one straight appearances. They surpassed the record they shared along with Colbert County. T.R. Miller and Deshler are right behind with a string of 30 consecutive seasons qualifying for the playoffs. The T.R. Miller Tigers also hold another distinction. They are 22-0 in first round home games. While that is not the most first round wins, it is the most without a loss. Hazlewood won 24 first round playoff games against a single loss before the school closed. Cedar Bluff, while not qualifying for the playoffs this season, is 20-0 at home in the first round. Mountain Brook opens on the road so they will not change their perfect 14-0 record at home in the first round. Gordo while 13-4 at home in the first round, has compiled a 10-2 record on the road. Not bad considering a team playing on the road generally faces a high ranked team. This year the Green Wave will open against Bayside Academy at home. Teams who have never won a first round game that qualified for the playoffs in 2012 include; D.A.R., Ardmore, Northside and Saraland. Each of these teams would like to get their championship hopes underway with a win next Friday night. Team missing the playoffs which are accustomed to being in the hunt for a state title include - Cedar Bluff (1995), Russellville (1999), North Jackson (1999), Alexandria (2002) and Walker (2006). |
