ASWA Players of the Week By Josh Bean
Auburn
High quarterback Bradley Northcutt's clutch passing made him this week's
ASWA Offensive Player of the Week.
Northcutt threw a 32-yard touchdown pass to Tyus O'Neal-El with 59 seconds
remaining to lift Auburn to a 42-25 victory over Carver-Montgomery in an
AHSAA Class 6A quarterfinal. He finished 18-of-31
passing for 305 yards and two touchdowns with no interceptions, and added 65
yards and a score on the ground.
"I
looked downfield and Tyus O'Neal looked like he was kinda getting tackled,"
Northcutt told AL.com after the game." He looked like he was going down. I
just threw it up, then I got hit. When I got up, I just heard everyone go
crazy and we won. It was awesome."
Northcutt edged Sweet Water's Jacoby Aldridge and Pickens County's Jermarcus
Brown for this week's award.
Aldridge ran for 335 yards and four touchdowns in a 34-24 Class 2A
quarterfinal victory at Luverne. Brown rushed for 261 yards on 33 carries
and scored three touchdowns in a 41-21 win over Ragland, scoring on a
47-yard punt return, a 48-yard run and a 9-yard run.
This
week's ASWA Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week winner is Edgewood
Academy's David Cayton. He returned a fumble 85
yards for a touchdown, made a last-minute interception, and had six tackles
in a 62-51 victory over Clarke Prep as the Wildcats won their 45th straight
game and secured the AISA AA title.
The finalists for the defensive/special teams award are Saraland's Tyler
Sims and Marengo Academy's Brant Lewis.
Sims
intercepted at St. Paul's pass in double overtime, leading to a 20-14
quarterfinal win by the Spartans. Lewis kicked a
30-yard field goal with three seconds remaining in a 31-28 win over
Restoration for the AISA Class A title. Lewis also averaged 40.3 yards on
three punts, 48.5 yards on six kickoffs, and was 4-of-4 on extra points.
ASWA
members from Andalusia, Auburn, Birmingham, Center, Florence, Fort Payne,
Gadsden, Huntsville, Mobile, Montgomery, Talladega and Tuscaloosa submitted
nominations this week.

OFFENSE
Jordan
Aubrey, Mobile Christian:
Completed 14 of 23 pass attempts for 227 yards and two touchdowns in the
Leopards' 56-42 loss at Washington County.
Ryan Carpenter, Colbert County:
Carried 30 times for 110 yards and touchdowns of 15 and 14 yards in a 20-14
loss to Saks.
Dantley Coker, Southside:
Rushed for 166 yards on 39 carries and scored three TDs in a 28-25 victory
over McAdory. He had 135 yards in the second half as Southside set a
single-season school record with 13 wins.
Josh Crawford, Edgewood:
Had 221 all-purpose yards and had a hand in five TDs in a 62-51 win over
Clarke Prep for the AISA Class AA championship. He ran 14 times for 102
yards and two TDs, caught a team-high five passes for 60 yards and a TD, and
had 59 yards in kickoff returns. He was 3-of-5 passing for 39 yards and two
touchdowns.
Cody
Daughtry, Piedmont:
Caught seven passes for 133 yards and two touchdowns, including a 7-yard
score in overtime, in the Bulldogs' 34-33 loss to Madison Academy.
KD
Davis, Restoration Academy:
Completed 11 of 20 passes for 239 yards, including two touchdowns, and ran
for another score in the 31-28 loss to Marengo Academy in the AISA Class A
championship.
Kendrick Doss, Florence:
Threw an 89-yard touchdown pass and scored on runs of 3 and 8 yards in a
22-21 loss to Hoover in the Class 6A playoffs.
Terrance "Tank" Hollingsworth, Berry:
Rushed for 201 yards and scored on a 59-yard run in a 9-8 loss to
Hubbertville.
DeAnthony Holcombe, Washington County:
Rushed for 271 yards and five touchdowns on 30 carries as the Bulldogs beat
Mobile Christian for the second time this season. Holcombe ran for 212 yards
and four scores in the second half.
Michael Howard, Spanish Fort:
Rushed for 167 yards and a 73-yard touchdown on 19 carries as the top-ranked
Toros rolled over No. 2 Jackson 36-6.
Hayden
Huckabee, Marengo Academy:
Rushed for 148 yards on 23 carries and scored TDs of 2, 6 and 3 yards as the
Longhorns beat Restoration Academy 31-28 in the AISA Class A championship
game; On the final drive, to set up a game-winning field goal by Brant
Lewis, Huckabee had a 28-yard run to the Restoration Academy 32 and threw a
pass to Cason Cook that carried to the 14.
DeVon Johnson, J.O. Johnson:
Caught six passes for 112 yards, including a 36-yard catch-and-run
touchdown, in a 10-8 loss to Munford.
Jordan
Johnson, Vestavia Hills:
Rushed 24 times for 130 yards with a 1-yard touchdown run in the 19-12 win
over Bob Jones.
Kerryon Johnson, Madison Academy:
Carried 21 times for 166 yards and touchdowns of seven and 10 yards in a
34-33, overtime win at Piedmont. The 10-yard touchdown came in OT and proved
to be the winning score.
Jake
McKenzie, Monroe Academy:
Rushed
for 126 yards and passed for 118 on Monroe's 31-6 win over Bessemer Academy
in the AISA Class AAA title game.
Tyus O'Neal-El, Auburn High:
Hauled in six catches for 162 yards and two touchdowns, including the
game-winning 32-yard touchdown with just under a minute left to lift Auburn
past Carver. His TD catches covered 32 and 41 yards.
Andrew Parker, Brantley:
Finished with 141 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries in a 36-19
victory at Loachapoka.
Jarrette Pope, Clarke Prep:
Rushed for 237 yards and four touchdowns on 21 carries in the Gators' 61-52
loss to Edgewood Academy in the AISA Class AA title game.
Gunner
Roach, UMS-Wright:
Threw two touchdown passes, including the game-winner with seven seconds to
go, and rushed for another in the Bulldogs' 35-34 win at Dadeville. Roach
also threw a 34-yard TD pass to Chauncey Callier and later scored on a
10-yard run.
Devin
Scott, Straughn:
Rushed for 152 yards on 19 carries and scored four touchdowns in the Tigers'
42-21 victory over Bayside Academy Friday night. Scott scored from 4, 1, 14
and 69 yards in the win.
Bradrick Shaw, Hoover:
Ran for 106 yards on 34 carries, including a 4-yard scoring run in the 22-21
victory over Florence.
Ito
Smith, McGill-Toolen:
Rushed
for 175 yards on 31 carries and scored three total touchdowns in the Yellow
Jackets second straight playoff road win, 28-21 over Smiths Station.
Ty
Sparks, Piedmont:
Completed 18 of 26 pass attempts for 298 yards and three TDs in a 34-33
overtime loss to Madison Academy.
Hayden Stephens, Tanner:
Carried 29 times for 128 yards and two touchdowns in a 26-14 win at
Montgomery Academy.
Deven Sullivan, Muscle Shoals:
Ran for 165 yards and touchdowns of 12 and 48 yards in a 35-7 win over
Athens.
Trent
Thash, Fyffe:
Carried 19 times for 112 yard and two touchdowns as Fyffe downed Lanett
31-6. Thrash scored on runs of 1 and 3 yards. He also had seven tackles, a
forced fumble and one sack.
Brandon Walker, Brantley:
Ran for 170 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries in a 36-19 win at
Loachapoka.
DEFENSE/SPECIAL TEAMS
Everett Curry, Bessemer Academy:
Recorded 10 tackles in a 31-6 loss to Monroe Academy.
Ethon
Felton, Muscle Shoals:
Had 10 tackles, including two for losses, in Trojans 35-7 win over Athens.
Graeham Hemphill, Fyffe:
Finished with 11 tackles and a forced fumble in a 31-6 win over Lanett.
La'Markus Martin, Madison Academy:
Deflected Piedmont's 2-point conversion pass in overtime to seal a 35-34
victory.
Dakota
Newsome, Fyffe:
Finished with 11 tackles, including two for a loss, in a 31-6 win over
Lanett.
Shade Pritchett, Marengo Academy:
Made 12 tackles with 1 1/2 for loss and forced a fumble in a 31-28 win over
Restoration.
Devonte' Simon, Pickens County:
Intercepted a pass in a 41-21 win over Ragland. He also scored on a 5-yard
run and threw a 19-yard touchdown pass.
Bran
Strickland, Munford:
Kicked the game winning 32-yard field goal to lift Munford to a 10-8 victory
over J.O. Johnson.
Matt Trulock, Bob Jones:
Booted field goals of 23 and 20 yards in a 19-12 loss to Vestavia Hills. Courtney Wilbanks, Restoration: Had nine tackles, including three for loss, in a 31-28 loss to Marengo Academy. Also ran nine times for 65 yards and a touchdown. |
