2013 Week 7

How good was Shades Valley quarterback Rashad Louie against Gardendale?

By Josh Bean
 For the ASWA

How good was Shades Valley quarterback Rashad Louie against Gardendale? Even coach Bill Smith handed out quick praise.

"I'd give him an A-plus," Bill Smith told AL.com after Friday's 61-28 win. "He was awesome out there tonight. He made the right reads, the offensive line gave him great protection, and his receivers bailed him out a couple of times with some Lynn Swann-type catches.

"All in all, I think it was his best game. He made the right decisions all night, looking to his second and third receivers and running when he needed to."

That's not just coach-speak. Louie's statistics support Smith's critique.

Louie accounted for seven touchdowns and 406 yards of total offense in the victory over Gardendale, and the performance earned him this week's ASWA Offensive Player of the Week award. Louie completed 22 of 28 passes for 390 yards with six touchdowns (11, 13, 36, 37, 50 and 51 yards) and ran for 106 yards with a 5-yard scoring run.

Louie's performance overshadowed this week's two finalists -- Sweet Water's Jakoby Aldridge and Haleyville's Brady Sherrill.

Aldridge, a Jacksonville State commit, ran for 289 yards and five TDs (4, 39, 82, 16 and 25 yards) on 30 carries as Sweet Water upset Class 2A No. 1 Washington County 35-32.

Sherrill ran 14 times for 199 yards and three TDs, caught a 12-yard TD pass and returned a kickoff for a TD in a 56-45 victory over Priceville. On defense, he also had an interception.

This week's Defense/Special Teams Player of the Week is Sardis' Keenan Lewis, who returned two kickoffs for touchdowns and finished with 266 all-purpose yards in a 61-28 loss to St. Clair County. He finished with 16 carries for 102 yards and a score, 152 yards in kickoff returns and two TDs and one reception for 12 yards and one score in the loss.

The finalists for the Defense/Special Teams recognition are Fairhope's John Baxter and Saks' Devin Harris.

Baxter made a 44-yard field goal as time expired to give the Pirates a 24-23 road win over rival Foley. Harris return two interceptions for touchdowns, recovered a blocked punt and caught a pass for a touchdown in a 43-7 win over Weaver.

ASWA members from Albertville, Alexander City, Andalusia, Anniston Auburn, Birmingham, Centre, Cullman, Decatur, Dothan, Florence, Fort Payne, Gadsden, Gardendale, Grove Hill, Huntsville, Jasper, Mobile, Montgomery, Oneonta, Scottsboro and Tuscaloosa submitted nominations this week.
