Week 13 - Round three of the playoffs

The third round of the 2013 high school football playoffs are complete. We are only two weeks away from the Super Six in Tuscaloosa. Here are a few interesting facts from this weekend's high school football action.

   *  Congratulations to the AISA State Champion winners: Marengo Academy defeated Restoration Academy 31-28 for the Class A crown. Edgewood just keeps winning in a wild one at Troy. They outscored Clarke Prep 61-52 in the highest scoring game ever in the AISA playoffs. Monroe Academy defeated Bessemer Academy 31-6 to win the Class AAA title.

   *  Hoover just keeps rolling toward Tuscaloosa. The Bucs came from behind to defeat Florence 22-21 in the third round of the playoffs. They lead the AHSAA schools with a twenty-eight game unbeaten streak. Edgewood Academy leads the AISA schools with a 45 game winning streak after winning the AISA-AA State Championship with a 61-52 victory over Clarke Prep on Friday.

  *  Maplesville leads for most consecutive home wins with a streak of 34 games after 41-0 shutout of Linden at home. Dadeville had their 33 game home winning streak snapped by UMS-Wright by a score of 35-34. Hoover (32) and Tanner (32) are close behind after this week's action. Hoover and Maplesville will host semi-final round games this week in hopes of continuing their streaks.

   *  T.R. Miller Tigers continued their string of 342 games without being shutout following a 24-20 loss to Leeds.

Other Notes:

I believe this is the first time in history that all of last years State Champions are still in the playoffs entering the semi-finals round. Of the twenty-four remaining teams only six were not number one seeds. All of the those six teams were number two seeds.

If Maplesville were to be shutout next week they would still have the ninth highest scoring team in history with 702 points this season. The record could be in reach for the Red Devils if they can win this week and score another 60 points this season. The record is held by Demopolis with 761 points in 2004.

Saraland won a third round playoff game for the first time in school history. Southside Gadsden won in the 3rd round for the first time since 1980. Saks' last third round win was in 1996 and Munford's was in 1997.

Hoover leads all teams with 15 semi-final round wins. Their record all-time stands at 15-1. Sweet Water is 11-4 and UMS-Wright is 7-3 in the semi-finals.

Hubbertville and Saraland will be in new territory this week when they play in the semi-finals of the playoffs for the first time. It has been since 1980 that Charles Henderson played this late in the season.

Super Six Notes:

Hoover, I mean the winner of the Hoover vs. Vestavia Hills game, will play a team that has never played in the Hoover Invitational, I mean a State Championship game. Seriously, the winner of the Auburn and McGill-Toolen game will be in a position that no previous team from either school has been previously.

In Class 5A, of the four remaining teams only Spanish Fort can lay claim to having participated in a State Championship game.
