The 2016 season is underway! Here are a few tidbits after one week of football action from around the state.

   *  The state's newest school kicked off their initial season this week. Mae Jemison of Huntsville lost to Calera 25-6. Asbury, the other new participant this year, will kick off their season on the road against Woodville this coming Friday.

   *  McGill-Toolen opened the season as the #1 team in Class 7A. The Yellow Jackets have never been ranked #1 in the school's history. They got started with an impressive 24-3 victory over 6A #1 Spanish Fort.

   *  Spanish Fort, coming off a state championship season saw their fifteen game winning streak come to an end. The Leeds Green Wave take over the state's longest winning streak with a string of 13 victories after defeating Lincoln 21-7. Edgewood Academy also saw their nation leading 71 game winning streak halted against Morgan Academy by a surprising score of 46-0. Bessemer Academy now lead all AISA schools with a streak of 14 consecutive wins following a 21-7 win over Monroe Academy.

   *   The last time Edgewood was shutout was back in 2006. Holly Pond shutout Coosa Christian 49-0. It was their first shutout wince the 2004 season some 118 game ago.

   *   Wilcox Central snapped their string of twenty-five consecutive losses with a 32-6 win over Ellwood Christian. The new leader in this dubious category is Barbour County with a string of twenty-three straight losses.

   *   Bullock County has also lost 46 consecutive region games and will begin region play next week.

   *  The Guntersville Wildcats have won 28 straight regular season games. They are well short of the 56 game mark set by Prattville a few years ago.

   *   Tanner has a streak of 47 consecutive region wins with no signs of slowing down this year. The Rattlers open region play next week.

   *   Muscle Shoals fell to Gardendale to end their streak of 37 consecutive home victories. Guntersville takes over first place with a string of 20 consecutive home wins.

   *   Spanish Fort had won 25 consecutive road games prior to Friday night. The new leader is Madison Academy with 23 straight wins on the road.

   *   The Clay-Chalkville Cougars have scored at least twenty points in 78 straight games following a 53-48 slugfest over Florence. That is a state record.

   *   Fyffe, who did not play this week, hopes to avoid the dreaded shutout and extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 206 games without being shutout.

   *  Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 175 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs opened the 2016 season as the #3 team in 7A and defeated Central Phenix City.

   *   The Davidson Warriors have won 19 season openers in a row since opening the 1997 season with a loss to Daphne. Ironically the Warriors opened this season against Daphne and came home with a 35-28 victory.

   *   Just for fun.... Midfield and Tarrant played to a 0-0 tie. It appears the game was a practice game and will not count in the season standings for either school. The last time a game ended in a 0-0 tie was not as long ago as you may think. Oddly enough, there were two games on 9/4/1987 that ended in a scoreless tie. Demopolis Academy and Escambia Academy did it and so did Fruitdale and Beat Four MS. The last scoreless tie between two AHSAA teams was back in 1982 when Leroy and Frisco City accomplished the feat.

   *   Coach Tuberville at Monroe Academy is still in search of his 100th win as a head football coach after the loss to Bessemer Academy in Troy. Ernie Willingham at Collinsville is at 99 wins as his team plays Crossville this week. Mark Hastings at Oakman has also collected 99 victories during his career as the Wildcats take on Lamar County this Friday night.
