Week 8

Which teams will qualify for the playoffs? We are much closer to knowing. The post season is coming soon! Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *  Piedmont extended their state leading winning streak to 18 with a 47-16 victory over Walter Wellborn.

  *  The best region in any classification? Region five in class 3A has compiled a record of 33-17. Take away their region games and they are an amazing 18-2 against outside competition.

  *  J.F. Shields is still struggling to put a competitive team on the football field. They have allowed more than 50 points in eleven consecutive games. That is a state record. They play at Fruitdale this week and close the season against a great Linden team.

   *   B.T. Washington with a 4-3 record is off to a good start in 2016. They are 2-3 in region play and with another region win could qualify for the playoffs for the first time in school history. They must defeat Greenville this week to have any shot. The team has also not won more games than they lost in any season since the school opened in 1991.

   *   Other teams with turnaround seasons include: Arab (1-9) to (5-3), Dale County (1-9) to (6-2), Holly Pond (1-9) to (5-2), Houston County (0-10) to (5-3), Isabella (1-9) to (6-1), Lynn (1-9) to (6-2), Oxford (3-7) to (8-0) and West Morgan (0-10) to (5-3). Congrats to these teams on great starts to the 2016 season.

   *   Some teams are not faring so well in 2016. Teams that are not finding the success they enjoyed last year include; Edgewood Academy (13-0) to (0-8), Fort Payne (8-3) to (0-7), Priceville (8-3) to (0-7) and Ranburne (10-2) to (1-6).

   *   Deshler is struggling this season, something that is rare for the Tigers. They are off to a 1-6 start and have not lost more than six games in a season since 1984.

   *   Montevallo defeated #10 Oakman 23-21 for their first victory over a ranked team since the 2005 season. Locust Fork pulled off the upset versus #9 Cleveland for their first win over a ranked foe since the 2008 season.

   *   Russell County will not be listed among the teams with the longest losing streaks anytime soon. They defeated Northview 20-17 Friday. The new team with the most consecutive losses is a familiar one in Barbour County with 29 in a row following a 35-28 loss to Samson.

   *   Bullock County has lost 50 consecutive region games.

   *   G. W. Long thrashed Abbeville 42-36 to extend their 31 game regular season winning streak.

   *   Tanner has a streak of 51 consecutive region wins. The Rattlers defeated Tarrant 49-26 to extend this streak.

   *   St. Paul's with a streak of 21 straight wins on the home field and beat Citronelle 35-14 on their home turf.

   *   Red Bay saw their string of 17 consecutive road victories go by the wayside in a 20-0 loss at Sheffield. Maplesville has now won 16 consecutive games on their opponent's home turf.

   *   Fyffe, who blanked Collinsville 47-0, extended their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 218 games without being shutout.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 182 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs seem to be in playoff mode following a 38-6 thrashing of Huffman.

   *   Fred Yancey, the head football coach at Briarwood, has amassed a record of 249-90 in 27 seasons for the Lions. He will be shooting for number 250 next week when his team takes the field against Woodlawn with a 6-1 record thus far this season.
