(Sept. 18, 2017)
Each week we will look at some of the longest running and most heated rivalries on the football schedule for this week. With the beginning of region play, there are not a lot of long running rivalries on the schedule this week.
Benjamin Russell vs. Opelika - Benjamin Russell leads this series with a 36-32-3 record but Opelika has won nine of the ;last ten games played between the two schools. The two teams first played in 1922 with Benjamin Russell, or Alexander City as they were known at that time, coming away with a 71-0 victory. From that first game through the 1974 season, the Wildcats built a 25-6 advantage. Since the 1974 season the Bulldogs of Opelika have a 26-7 advantage over the Wildcats. Opelika won last years game by a score of 34-0 and have won the last four games in the series.
Berry Fayette vs. Hubbertville - This will be the 76th meeting between these two schools. Berry holds a 39-32-4 advantage over Hubbertville but has lost four of the last five in the series including last year's 20-6 loss. The teams first met back in 1935 with Berry taking a 13-0 win. The two schools have met every year since that initial game except during World War II.
Brilliant at Marion County - Marion County has won seven of the last eight games to break open what was a close series ands now holds a 43-37-5 advantage over Brilliant. The teams first met in 1930 and have played every year since except during World War II. Marion County won that first game by a score of 72-0 which is their largest victory in the series. Marion County won last years contest 54-12.
Chilton County at Wetumpka - Wetumpka defeated Chilton County 40-32 last year and now has a 41-33-1 advantage in the series. The two schools first met in 1916 and actually played three times that first season with Chilton County taking two of the three contests. This will be the 76th meeting between the two schools.
Shades Valley at Hueytown - Hueytown leads this very close series with a 32-30-3 advantage after winning the last three games. The Golden Gophers took last year's contest by a score of 22-20. The two schools first met back in 1922 and Hueytown won twelve of the first thirteen games that were played in the series. They played each other almost every year from 1927 until the AHSAA went to region play in 1974. The only year they did not play during this time was in 1944.
