Week 9


The 2017 regular season is nearing the end of region play. The playoffs are coming! Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *   Maplesville has the state's longest winning streak at 30 games following a beat down of Autaugaville by the score of 71-6.

   *   Barbour County lost to Cottonwood by a score of 53-22 and still has the state's longest losing streak at thirty-nine games.

   *   Bullock County has lost 57 consecutive region games following a 31-6 loss to region foe Montgomery Catholic.

   *   Fyffe extended their 26 game regular season winning streak with a 62-7 victory over Section.

   *   The state's longest region winning streak also belongs to Maplesville who has a string of 51 straight region victories.

   *   Piedmont has the state's longest home winning streak at twenty-five games. The Bulldogs defeated Ohatchee 41-20 on their home field. Monroe Academy (32) lead the AISA schools.

   *   Maplesville and Fyffe have also won 26 consecutive road games following their latest victories.

   *   Maplesville has scored twenty or more points in 45 consecutive games.

   *   Fyffe hopes to avoid the dreaded shutout and extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 229 games without being shutout.

   *   Greene County defeated Aliceville 38-32 for their first win over a ranked team since the 2008 football season.  

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 194 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs are the #2 team in Class 7A.

   *   Scottsboro won the 500th game in the history of the school when they defeated Boaz 30-14 on Friday night.

   *   Did you notice that T.R. Miller and Fayette County are tied atop the all-time wins list. With the Miller loss and the Fayette County victory on Friday both teams have now won 674 games in their respective school's football history.

   *   Did you notice the Luverne and Elba score. Well in case you didn't it was 20-4. When I first saw that one I knew it had to be a mistake. But, it turns out that Elba actually scored on two safeties and the score was 20-4.

 * Cherokee set a team record in a win 70-0 over Tharptown breaking the previous record set in a victory over Clements 68-0 on 10/15/1993.

 * St. John Paul II set a team record in a 67-7 loss to Brooks tying the previous record set in a loss to Madison County 67-7 on 10/5/2012.

 * Tharptown set a team record in a 70-0 loss to Cherokee breaking the previous record set in a loss to Hatton 68-0 on 10/16/2015.



Margin of Victory in a game

 * Brooks set a team record by defeating St. John Paul II 67-7 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Clements 57-0 on 10/30/1998.

 * Cherokee set a team record by defeating Tharptown 70-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Clements 68-0 on 10/15/1993.

 * Florence set a team record by defeating Hazel Green 61-7 tying the previous record set when they defeated Columbia 62-8 on 10/5/2007.
 * Northside set a team record by defeating Holt 56-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Greene County 62-8 on 10/19/2012.

 * Satsuma set a team record by defeating Monroe County 49-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Millry 41-0 on 10/17/1958.

 * South Lamar set a team record by defeating Brilliant 62-0 breaking the previous record set when they defeated Holy Spirit 56-0 on 9/25/2015.

 * Gardendale set a team record in a loss 55-7 to Pinson Valley tying the previous record set when they lost to Shades Valley 48-0 on 9/10/1993.

 * St. John Paul II set a team record in a loss 67-7 to Brooks tying the previous record set when they lost to Madison County 67-7 on 10/5/2012.

 * Tharptown set a team record in a loss 70-0 to Cherokee breaking the previous record set when they lost to Hatton 68-0 on 10/16/2015.

 * Mae Jemison set a team record with a 8-1 record. That tops the previous mark of 6-5-0 in 2016.

 * Mars Hill set a team record with a 5-3 record. That tops the previous mark of 2-8-0 in 2015.

 * Gadsden City set a team record with a 3-6 record. That ties the previous number of losses when they finished 7-6-0 in 2016.

 * Helena set a team record with a 1-7 record. That ties the previous number of losses when they finished 3-7-0 in 2016.

 * Houston Academy set a team record with a 0-9 record. That ties the previous number of losses when they finished 1-9-0 in 2016.

 * Northside Methodist Academy set a team record with a 0-10 record. That tops the previous number of losses when they finished 2-8-0 in 2014.

 * Sparta Academy set a team record with a 1-9 record. That ties the previous number of losses when they finished 1-9-0 in 2016.

 * Northside Methodist Academy set a team record by allowing 392 points. That tops the previous mark of 389 points set in 2014.

 * Shoals Christian set a team record by allowing 394 points. That tops the previous mark of 388 points set in 2008.

 * Smiths Station set a team record by allowing 364 points. That tops the previous mark of 349 points set in 2016.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

Luverne 'Toad' Wise was the first female football player in Alabama and may have been the first in the country. She was a kicker for the Escambia County Blue Devils in 1939-40.
