First Round Playoffs

The playoffs are underway. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *    One more playoff game will be played Monday as Oakman travels to Pike County in a first round 3A game. Once that game is played, we can post the Playoff Predictions for the second round.

   *    The AISA state championships are set for next Friday in Troy. Bessemer Academy and Monroe Academy square off in the AAA game. It is the fifth time in six seasons these two have played for the championship with the teams splitting the four games. In AA, Autauga Academy and Coach Bobby Carr go for another title against Escambia Academy. Chambers and Crenshaw will do battle for the Class A championship.

   *   UMS-Wright has the longest winning streak in the AHSAA having posted 15 consecutive victories following a first round 43-8 win over West Blocton. Monroe Academy leads the AISA with a 25 game winning streak following a 45-7 semi-final win over Macon-East.

   *   The Volunteers of Monroe Academy have a string of 40 consecutive home wins following their latest victory Friday. Fyffe leads the AHSAA schools with a 29 game home winning streak after defeating Cleveland 63-0.

   *   Lanett leads with 12 consecutive road wins following an opening round home win over Florala. Chambers Academy leads the AISA schools with a 22 game road winning streak.

   *   Maplesville has scored twenty or more points in 61 consecutive games after defeating Sweet Water 35-12.

   *   The Fyffe Blue Devils continue to score each and every game. They extend their streak of consecutive games scoring to 245 games.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 209 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season. The Bucs opened the playoffs with another victory in search of another title this year.

   *   All four teams from Class 7A region 3, 6A region 4, 6A region 6 and 4A region 2 advanced to the second round of the post season.

   *   Cottage Hill Christian, D.A.R, Mars Hill and Waterloo won first round playoff games for the first time in their school's history.

   *   Hoover/Berry is 24-1 in the second round of the playoffs. Colbert County is 25-5, Maplesville is 24-4 along with UMS-Wright at 21-5. Spanish Fort is 10-0, the most wins without a defeat in the second round.

   *   Falkville, Headland, Jacksonville, Providence Christian, Spring Garden and Westminster Christian have never won a second round playoff game in their school's history along with the first time winners listed above. Others with long second round victory droughts include: Abbeville (1971), Ariton (1993), Montgomery Catholic (1989) and Good Hope (1997).

   *   Austin was shutout by Mountain Brook 31-0 in the first round. It was the first time in 101 games the Black Bears did not score dating back to the 2010 football season.

   *   UMS-Wright head football coach has an overall record of 299-85 in 30 years at Shaw, Murphy and UMS-Wright. He will be going for his 300th win this week when the Bulldogs take on Trinity in Montgomery. He will join Buddy Anderson (335), Jamie Riggs (312), Waldon Tucker (309) and Glenn Daniel (302) in the elite 300 club.

   *   North Jackson defeated Curry 47-6 Friday. They have scored 664 points in eleven games for an average of 60.4 points each week. The record for scoring in the regular season was over 90 years old set by the Tuscaloosa Black Bears in 1926 when they averaged 59.1 points over a nine game season. The season record for scoring including the playoffs belongs to Linden set in 2016 when they scored 764 points. The Chiefs have a great shot at that record if they can win a few more games. North Jackson has scored at least 40 points in every game. The 2015 Clay-Chalkville team scored more than forty in 13 straight games.
