Second Round Playoffs


The playoffs are underway. Half the teams are going home and the other half will play on in search of a title. Here are a few tidbits from this week's action.

   *    The AISA state championships were settled in Troy Friday. Bessemer Academy fell to Monroe Academy 41-35 in the AAA game. It is the fifth time in six seasons these two have played for the championship with Monroe holding a 3-2 advantage. It is also the Volunteers second straight championship as they finish the season 13-0 for the second year in a row.

   *   In AA Autauga Academy won their second title in three years and fifth overall. Coach Bobby Carr won his 8th championship as a head coach as the Generals defeated Escambia Academy by a score of 49-0.

   *   Chambers Academy beat Crenshaw Christian 22-12 as Coach Jason Allen claims the first ever championship for the Rebels. Chambers came up short in the last three Class A title games and finish with a perfect 13-0 record..

   *   UMS-Wright has the longest winning streak in the AHSAA having posted 16 consecutive victories following a second round 48-7 win over Trinity. Monroe Academy leads the AISA with a 26 game winning streak following their championship game win.

   *   The Volunteers of Monroe Academy have a string of 40 consecutive home wins following. Fyffe leads the AHSAA schools with a 29 game home winning streak after winning on the road last week.

   *   Lanett leads with 12 consecutive road wins following a second round home win over Marengo. Chambers Academy leads the AISA schools with a 22 game road winning streak.

   *   Maplesville has scored twenty or more points in 62 consecutive games after defeating Georgiana 21-14.

   *   The Fyffe Blue Devils continue to score each and every game. They extend their streak of consecutive games scoring to 246 games.

   *   Mars Hill, Providence Christian, Spring Garden and Westminster Christian won second round playoff games for the first time in their school's history.

   *   Hoover/Berry is 19-2 in the semi-finals of the playoffs. Thomson (1-2), Central Phenix City (1-4) and Lee Montgomery (5-2) combined have fewer wins.

   *   Homewood (11-3), Leroy (11-5), Maplesville is 18-6, Deshler (14-7) along with UMS-Wright at 13-8 have the most third round victories. . Spanish Fort is 10-0, the most wins without a defeat in the second round.

   *   In Class 5A, all eight Number One seeds advanced to the quarter-finals this season.

   *   There will be a clash of unbeatens when UMS-Wright (11-0) and American Christian (12-0) tee it up next Friday night down in Mobile.

   *   Ariton, Central Clay County, Flomaton, Mars Hill, Providence Christian, Spring Garden, St. Luke's and Westminster Christian have never won a third round playoff game in their school's history. Others with long second round victory droughts include: Etowah (1999), Good Hope (1997), Greenville (1994), Lee Montgomery (1999) and Thompson (1982).

   *   Gardendale was shutout by Homewood 14-0 in the second round. It was the first time in 111 games the Rockets did not score dating back to the 2009 football season.

   *   UMS-Wright head football coach has an overall record of 300-85 in 30 years at Shaw, Murphy and UMS-Wright. He gained the 300th win this week when the Bulldogs defeated Trinity 48-7 in Montgomery. He joins Buddy Anderson (335), Jamie Riggs (312), Waldon Tucker (309) and Glenn Daniel (302) in the elite 300 club.

Great Moments in Alabama High School Football History

The first football game played by a high school team in Alabama was in 1892 when Central Birmingham (Phillips) lost to Alabama 56-0 on November 11.
