First Round of the Playoffs

The push to the Super Seven Championships is underway. Here are a few tidbits and notes from this week's action.

   *   Previews of every playoff game will be available by Sunday.

   *   UMS-Wright owns the state's longest winning streak at twenty-nine games. The Bulldogs defeated Dale County 51-7 as they embark on another trip to the finals.

   *   The Volunteers of Monroe Academy lead all schools with a string of 46 consecutive home wins after dropping Lee-Scott Academy 48-27 Friday night. Fyffe leads the AHSAA schools with a 37 game home winning streak after shutting out Sheffield 48-0 in the first round.

   *   UMS-Wright holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 15 consecutive. Chambers Academy leads the AISA schools with a streak of 25 straight road victories.

   *   Fyffe also has the longest current streak for scoring 20 or more points in a game. The Red Devils have put up at least 20 points in 57 consecutive games dating back to 2015.

   *   Fyffe continues to extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 260 games without being shutout.

   *   Hoover has been ranked by the ASWA for an amazing 220 consecutive polls dating back to the 2000 season.

   *   How about Park Crossing beating Saraland 30-27 in the first round? The Thunderbirds are 4-7 on the season following the victory. Their losses are to teams that are 54-20. Only Lee Montgomery did not make the playoffs and five of the other six teams reached the second round. This is one time that looking only at a team's record can be very deceiving.

   *   The surprise team of the year thus far has to be Pike Road. The Patriots, under head coach Patrick Browning, are 11-0 in only their second season of football. They have scored at least 35 points in every game and only allowed more than two touchdowns in a game once to a 10-1 St. James team. They finished 6-5 last year and made the playoffs. This week the Patriots entertain Mobile Christian in a second round game.

   *   Eighteen teams remain undefeated in the AHSAA. Naturally that number will dwindle in the next few weeks.

   *   All four teams from Class 6A region 6 and 3A region 6 advanced to the second round of the post season.

   *   Northside, Pike Road, Priceville, St. John Paul II and Talladega won first round playoff games for the first time in their school's history.

   *   Falkville, Jacksonville, James Clemens, North Sand Mountain and Pike Road have never won a second round playoff game in their school's history along with the first time winners listed above.

   *   Hoover/Berry is 25-1 in the second round of the playoffs. Maplesville is 25-4 along with UMS-Wright at 22-5. Spanish Fort is 11-0, the most wins without a defeat in the second round.

   *   Hueytown  won the 500th game in the school's history according to our records. The Yellow Jackets are 500-433-32 since first playing football back in 1921. They are 19-1 this season following a 44-25 win over Selma on Friday.

   *   Ronnie Cottrell, the head football coach at Mobile Christian recorded the 100th win in his coaching career as the Leopards defeated Geneva 49-36. Coach Cottrell began his career as a head coach at Kinston back in 1983 before jumping to the college level in the 1990s. After returning to the high school level he coached around south Alabama before settling in at Mobile Christian in 2015.

   *   Roland Jones Jr. also joins the 100 win list as Brantley defeated Fruitdale 72-32. After ten seasons at Crenshaw Christian Coach Jones became the head coach at Brantley last year. His overall record in 12 seasons is 100-35.

   *   Reuben Nelson at Ramsay became the third coach this week to join the list as his team defeated Demopolis 34-12 in the first round. Coach Nelson has been a head coach at Midfield and Ramsay the past 14 years with a record of 100-62.
