Second Round of the Playoffs

The drive to the Super Seven Championships is underway. Here are a few tidbits and notes from this week's action.

   *   Previews of every playoff game will be available Sunday.

   *   UMS-Wright owns the state's longest winning streak at thirty games. The Bulldogs defeated Talladega 31-6 for a second round victory.

   *   The Volunteers of Monroe Academy saw their string of 46 consecutive home wins come to an end on Friday as the fell to Bessemer Academy 45-27. Fyffe leads the AHSAA schools with a 38 game home winning streak after knocking off Ranburne 38-7 in the second round.

   *   UMS-Wright holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 16 consecutive following their win over Talladega on the road. Chambers Academy leads the AISA schools with a streak of 25 straight road victories.

   *   Fyffe also has the longest current streak for scoring 20 or more points in a game. The Red Devils have put up at least 20 points in 58 consecutive games dating back to 2015.

   *   Fyffe continues to extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 261 games without being shutout.

   *   The Cinderella Park Crossing team continues to win after dropping Stanhope Elmore 35-32 in the second round. The Thunderbirds are 5-7 on the season following the victory. Their losses are to teams that are 57-22. Only Lee Montgomery did not make the playoffs and five of the other six teams reached the second round. The last team to reach the third round after going 3-7 in the regular season was Pisgah in 1997. No team with a 3-7 regular season every won a third round game. Carrolton in 1985 with a 3-6 mark lost in the smeifinals.

   *   Eleven teams remain undefeated in the AHSAA. Decatur Heritage Christian and Mars Hill have never been 12-0 in any season. Seven teams saw their hopes for a perfect season come to an end last Friday night.

   *   Hackleburg was shut out for the first time in 144 games as they fell to Spring Garden by a score of 34-0 on Friday.

   *   Monroe Academy had a chance at history if they could have defeated Bessemer Academy. The Volunteers are now tied with Russellville for the most consecutive ten win seasons at eleven. Monroe Academy finishes the season with a 9-3 record.

   *   Think about this. Every region champion in Class 1A advanced to the third round. Not a single upset of the #1 seeded teams. The only other time that happened, since the AHSAA went to region play in 2000, was back in 2009 when Class 1A pulled off the same feat.

   *   Three teams from Class 6A region 6 advance to the quarterfinals of the post season. Other regions accomplishing the same feat include 5A region 4, 3A region 1, 2A region 6. In Class 3A region 6 three teams are still alive in the playoffs. All three have 11-1 records (Piedmont, Randolph County and Walter Wellborn).

   *   Jacksonville, North Sand Mountain and Northside won second round playoff games for the first time in their school's history.

   *   Ariton, Center Point, Collinsville and Spring Garden have never won a quarterfinal playoff game in their school's history along with the first time winners listed above.

   *   Sweet Water is 12-5 in the third round of the playoffs. Pickens County is 8-3 along with Deshler at 15-7 and UMS-Wright at 14-8.

   *   Jason Howard the head football coach at Spring Garden recorded the 100th win in his coaching career as the Panthers defeated Hackleburg 34-0. Coach Howard began his career as a head coach at Spring Garden back in 2003 before spending two seasons (2010-11) at Ohatchee. After returning to coach the Panthers in 2012 his teams have qualified for the playoffs in each of the last six seasons. His overall record as a head football coach is 100-87 in 17 years.
