Third Round of the Playoffs

Class 7A is set for a rematch of last year's championship game. The AISA schools have three champions and the remainder are on to the semifinal round of the playoffs. Here are a few tidbits and notes from this week's action.

   *   Congratulations to the AISA champions. Bessemer Academy defeated Glenwood School 49-22 for their first title in three years.

   *   Autauga Academy won their third championship in four seasons by dropping Escambia Academy by a score of 23-6. Coach Bobby Carr wins his ninth title in the AISA. The most by any coach in any league.

   *    Southern Academy won their first championship since 2007 be beating Chambers Academy 14-8 in Troy.

   *   UMS-Wright owns the state's longest winning streak at thirty-one games. The Bulldogs defeated Catholic Montgomery 21-0 in the third round to reach the semifinals in 4A. They will face Andalusia for the third straight year in the semifinals.

   *   Fyffe leads the AHSAA schools with a 39 game home winning streak after knocking off Red Bay 45-6 in the third round. The Red Devil defense has allowed more than seven points in a game only once this season.

   *   UMS-Wright holds onto the longest road winning streak having won 16 consecutive following their win over Catholic Montgomery on the home turf. Chambers Academy leads the AISA schools with a streak of 25 straight road victories. The Rebels played Friday on a neutral field in Troy and lost to Southern Academy in the championship game.

   *   Fyffe also has the longest current streak for scoring 20 or more points in a game. The Red Devils have put up at least 20 points in 59 consecutive games dating back to 2015.

   *   Fyffe continues to extend their streak of consecutive games scoring. They are currently sitting on a string of 262 games without being shutout.

   *   Only five teams remain undefeated in the AHSAA. Mars Hill has never been 13-0 in any season. Central Phenix City, UMS-Wright, Fyffe and Lanett also have not felt the sting of defeat this season.

   *   Four teams remain alive that finished the regular season with 6-4 records. Spanish Fort, Anniston, T.R. Miller and Mobile Christian all lost four games during the season only to come alive once the post season began.

   *   Two number four seeds have advanced to the semifinals of the playoffs. Spanish Fort and T.R. Miller still have a shot at a championship in two weeks.

   *   Class 5A will see three Birmingham area schools fight it out with Central Clay County for a chance at a trip to Auburn in two weeks.

   *   Collinsville and Jacksonville won quartefinal playoff games for the first time in their school's history.

   *   Walter Wellborn has never won a semifinal playoff game in their school's history along with the first time winners from the third round listed above. Oxford (1993), Anniston (1994) and Andalusia (1977) will be in search of their first semifinal round win in a while.

   *   Sweet Water is 12-5 in the semifinals. UMS-Wright is 9-5 along with Reeltown at 8-4 and Fyffe at 5-2.

   *   UMS-Wright and Andalusia will be playing their sixth game in the last three years against each other. UMS-Wright has won the last five games between the two teams.

   *   Mobile Christian beat Gordo 41-21 at home to advance to the semifinals of the Class 3A bracket. The Leopards' have an 8-4 record this year playing with what is likely the toughest schedule in the state. Their opponents have a combined record of 99-40. Losses came to Catholic Pensacola FL (11-1), Faith Academy (5A, 11-1), UMS-Wright (4A, 12-0) and Flomaton (3A, 11-2). They get a rematch this week against T.R. Miller a team they defeated in week seven by a score of 33-15 at home.

   *   Jeff Smith, the head football coach at Water Wellborn, captured his 150th victory as the Panthers defeated Randolph County 27-20. The win avenges a regular season loss and sets up a rematch with region rival Piedmont next week on the road. Coach Smith has accumulated a record of 150-103 in 23 seasons. He spend six at Ohatchee and six at Hueytown before arriving at Wellborn in 2009.

   *   Coach Benefield won his 250th game as the head football coach at Fyffe. He is 250-42 with the Red Devils and 295-53 overall at Sylvania and Fyffe. truly an amazing record in 28 seasons. That is averaging over 10 wins every year.

   *   I hope everyone takes time to enjoy this Thanksgiving season. I know I am looking forward to my son's fried turkey and a feast for a dinner this week. Also getting to see all the grandkids and aggravate them a little. Spend some quality time with your family and we will be back here next Friday for a recap of the semifinals.
